Best Things to Do:

Are you looking for a good and affordable SIM card for Thailand? I often wonder which provider currently has the best network and offers. Here are my tips!

If you think your trip to Thailand might drive your phone costs through the roof, you should consider getting a local Thai SIM card.

I find this very convenient. Not only am I unreachable on my regular number (after all, I'm on vacation), but I can surf the internet on my smartphone. Occasionally, it's handy to send messages or make calls.

During my travels, I'm not concerned about constantly being reachable. I usually book my accommodations only one or two days in advance. Therefore, I enjoy having a local SIM card so I'm not reliant on internet cafes with slow connections.

On my last trip to Thailand, I bought a local Thai SIM card. I'll explain here how you can easily, quickly, and hassle-free get a prepaid SIM card (I don't need a contract) and recharge it.

Before you continue reading, you might ask yourself whether you actually need a SIM card in Thailand. If you don't mind being offline, you can likely find free Wi-Fi in restaurants, malls, and hotels.

Prepaid SIM Card for Thailand: How to Surf and Call Cheaply in Thailand

To quickly look for your next accommodation on booking or Airbnb, navigate to your next destination using Google Maps, or simply find great dining tips, you need internet access. This is very simple in Thailand.

All you need besides a local SIM card? A phone without a SIM lock.

Best SIM Cards in Thailand

When traveling in Thailand, we recommend using a SIM card from AIS, True Move, or DTAC.

Market Leader AIS

The network coverage is excellent and there is reception even on smaller islands and in remote areas. AIS offers a variety of prepaid SIM packages. The most relevant ones for tourists are:

  • SIM Super Network: Unlimited Data, 5 Days, THB 50 ($1.31)
  • SIM Net Marathon: Unlimited Data, One Month, 880 THB ($22.97) - There are many SIM Net Marathon offers depending on what you need and what you use.

True Move

Everyone has probably held a TrueMove card at some point: they are often given away for free right upon arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. I used this card on my first trip to Thailand.

TrueMove offers several different prepaid packages:

  • 1 GB Data, 7 Days THB 39
  • 3 GB Data, 3 Days, THB 75
  • 5 GB Data, 7 Days, THB 99
  • 8 GB Data, 7 Days, THB 149
  • 15 GB Data, 7 Days, THB 150
  • 15 GB Data, 15 Days, THB 249

My Favorite: DTAC

The network coverage is fantastic. On my last trip to Thailand, I had a SIM card from DTAC.

DTAC offers a range of SIM-only plans for tourists:

  • Happy Net: Free YouTube & Social Media, THB 49
  • Happy Combo: Unlimited Data, 10 Days, THB 99
  • Happy Combo 2: Unlimited Data, 30 Days, THB 199

A tip from a friend who has been exploring Thailand every year from November to April: she uses a prepaid card from DTAC with an internet flat rate for 399 Baht. This is not a tourist card, but the network is excellent.

The listed tariffs are specifically designed for tourists. They naturally include a data volume, a base credit for calls and SMS. Prices are relatively similar, and reception is generally good everywhere.

Overall, we believe True Move is the cheapest option if you want to purchase your SIM card. I prefer AIS and DTAC because I think the internet is a bit faster and the coverage is better. But this can depend on your location. If you don't need a data flat rate, comparing prices is worthwhile.

How to Buy a SIM Card in Thailand

You can buy a Thai prepaid SIM card either in person at international airports, in mobile provider stores, in convenience stores, or online.

Airport:

Right upon arrival at airports (especially Bangkok and Phuket), all the mentioned providers have shops. Here, you can buy a SIM card directly after leaving the airplane.

Generally, you should expect higher costs and lower data package offers at the airport, so we don't necessarily recommend buying a SIM card there.

Therefore, I would recommend buying a SIM card directly at the mobile provider's shop if you need to watch your budget. However, we often buy a SIM card directly at the airport for convenience so we can immediately use Grab for a taxi or other internet services. But only if unlimited data packages are offered.

If you prefer to be connected at all times, you can use an eSIM or purchase an Asian prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let's take a look at the data plans offered by AIS, True Move, and DTAC.

7 Eleven Stores:

You can get a SIM card from the aforementioned providers at any 7-Eleven (also at other convenience stores). Even on small islands like Koh Yao Noi there was a 7-Eleven, and SIM cards and credits were available.

Shopping Malls:

In major shopping malls in all larger Thai cities, you can get SIM cards and credits.

Personal Information is Mandatory!

When purchasing a SIM card, you will need to present your data (passport or other ID) and officially register your name and the acquired phone number. For us, this process is nothing new as it has long been standard in Europe.

So here's a tip: Buy your card in a store of the mobile provider in 7-Eleven convenience stores, in Tesco Lotus markets, or at a Telewiz shop.

Signing a contract is not an option for me. Therefore, only a prepaid SIM card is suitable for me: no contract obligations, and the balance can be recharged anywhere.

How to Activate Your SIM Card and Recharge

With my datc phone card, I just had to insert the card into my phone. After that, I received a confirmation message via SMS, which included my phone number and balance. After a restart, I immediately had internet, and the smartphone was ready to use.

You can also have your SIM card activated by a seller. They are usually very helpful.

I also recharged my balance very easily (SIM card without a data flat rate): at the 7-Eleven store, I bought top-up cards. Instructions for activation are explained on the back.

Alternatively, you can tell the staff your desired amount and phone number. The new balance will then be available immediately.

How to Buy a Thai Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you want to activate your SIM card right upon arrival, you can buy it online or on websites like Amazon.

On Amazon, you'll find various offers. For example, the Prepaid Asia-Pacific SIM Card works in more than 17 countries and even gives you unlimited data for 14 days. Thailand is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so take a look and make sure the countries you plan to visit are listed.

The final option is to purchase an eSIM card for Thailand, or if you're traveling to multiple countries, an eSIM plan for Asia.
