My Experience Report After 5 Years with the Tourne Mobil 425 - Peugeot Boxer Motorhome

Allow me to introduce? Vincent the Van. My (now sold) box van from the Slovenian manufacturer Tourne (Tourne Mobil). This is a motorhome based on a Peugeot Boxer (the same model type as a Citroën Jumper or Fiat Ducato Camper).

Since I am often asked why I chose to buy this motorhome from this specific manufacturer, here are all the important facts with photos. I would buy from this manufacturer again anytime. However, at some point I wanted a four-wheel-drive vehicle suitable for Africa. Therefore, I now own the Big 5 from Burow.

In this article, you will find the following information:

  • Technical Specifications & Standard Equipment of the Tourne
  • My personal arguments and pros for buying
  • My additional modifications and upgrades to the van

Previous tours made with the Tourne Mobil (also suitable for beginners):

  • Road Trip in Normandy (France)
  • Road Trip along the Baltic Sea
  • Short Trip to Lake Constance
  • The Charming Taubertal in Baden-Württemberg
  • Trip with my nephew to the Black Forest: Excursion Destinations in the Black Forest (also suitable for children)

This is why I decided on a ready-made motorhome

Not everyone is handy or has enough time to build a camper on their own. I lacked both: time and knowledge. A friend with experience in camper conversions would have supported me, but I travel too often worldwide. After all, it is my profession.

After ordering, a little wait time, and "settling in" the van, I now introduce my Tourne Mobil box van in detail.

My enthusiasm for the Tourne lies in the fact that it already comes with nearly everything I wished for in its basic configuration.

Since I get many emails:

Even after more than 50,000 kilometers driven, I am still 100% convinced of the purchase.

However: I will be driving more on pothole roads in the future. Therefore, I am currently considering trading the Tourne for a 4x4 Sprinter with a specialized chassis and more watt depth, or a pickup with a cabin. Unfortunately, the Tourne is not designed for future plans (Africa, Panamericana or Iceland's highlands).

My Reasons for Buying the Tourne Mobil Motorhome

Why did I ultimately decide on the Tourne? The standard features come fully equipped. The manufacturer is experienced in conversions and possesses extensive knowledge about what is essential for campers and motorhome enthusiasts.

Reason 1 for Purchase: Insulation

Winter Camping with my Box Van Tourne in Sölden

The manufacturer is a market leader in Scandinavia. Fans of winter camping, traveling to cooler countries, or road trips beyond warm summers can rest assured: the insulation is excellent! I would even say: no other manufacturer insulates their camper as well as Tourne.

After nearly freezing during an unexpected winter storm in Australia at -2 degrees Celsius with inadequate insulation, this became the decisive argument for me! Sure, who expects a "real winter" in Australia? It exists, believe me.

In Sölden at -15°C, the insulation performed excellently. Thanks to thermal mats in front, we also had no moisture on the glass inside:

2. Motorhome Interior: Modern Design

Tourne Mobil Interior
The bright Scandinavian design in the Tourne motorhome convinced me. photo by viel-unterwegs.de

What additionally motivated me to buy was the bright interior design of the motorhome. I am not a fan of the 'retirement colors' beige and brown, as they are implemented in many other campers. This is not meant to sound discriminatory; to me, this brown simply has an outdated character and is not at all my style.

The Scandinavian bright oak decor design of the Tourne, on the other hand, creates a bright, warm, and friendly atmosphere. I love it! Additionally, the windows in the roof and side are so large that even in winter you have plenty of light.

Update: By now, manufacturers like Hymer have also recognized the trend and suddenly offer camper vans with bright interiors.

3. Insect Screens on All Openings

Ideal are the windows from Dometic. You can not only completely darken them (I prefer to sleep in the dark), but also add insect screens. Anyone who has ever gone camping or tenting in the summer (anywhere) knows how annoying mosquitoes or flies can be inside.

In Australia, we had to completely seal the camper while cooking (even at 40 degrees) because we had no insect screens. Leaving a window open at night for fresh air meant: the next morning we were covered in mosquito bites.

The Tourne camper, however, even has a large insect screen at the side door that I never want to do without again. Therefore, I do not understand how many "Instagram" campers (sorry, I have to say it this way) keep posting pictures in their well-styled buses - without insect screens.

4. Plus: Storage Space

Storage in the Tourne Mobil Motorhome
Practical: Ample storage space in the Tourne Mobil motorhome. photo by viel-unterwegs.de

Thanks to the smart arrangement of cabinets, you have enough storage space everywhere. Large cabinets on both sides above the bed in the rear, a big cabinet under the refrigerator, as well as under the stove and sink, and another above the table. In the rear under the bed, you also have additional storage space!

Even the space above the driver's cabin offers ample storage for those who, like me, do not always bring the cushions for the second bed.

What I Would Have Liked

I would have really liked a motorhome with automatic transmission. Not because I can't drive stick, but because I'm lazy. Unfortunately, this camper isn't available like that. Neither Peugeot nor Fiat offer a box van with "real" automatic (I was advised against it, as well as the 4x4 conversion version).

Why this isn't such a big deal: A friend (who also owns the Tourne) convinced me that the manual transmission is really okay, as you drive more leisurely with the camper anyway. He is right. I no longer miss the automatic transmission in the motorhome at all. On the contrary: I seek out the clutch in my other car.

Standard Equipment of the Tourne Mobil

For the current details, it's best to check directly on the Tourne Mobil website. Models change every year. I drive the Tourne model 2020, for the latest news regarding the Tourne Mobil 2023, it's best to check there. My Tourne is 5.99 meters long. Meanwhile, there is also a 6.40 meter version with longitudinal beds. I don't need that, but if you desire a longer vehicle, that may be of interest. However, you'll have less space in the bathroom and front at the dinette.

Of course, I also recommend my trusted dealership: Auto Nees in Stockstadt near Aschaffenburg.

Note on All Terrain Tires, Rims, and TÜV

▷ Please do not contact me regarding TÜV (German technical inspection). You need to find someone who allows these tires without widening. Not everyone does this.

▷ I ordered and had the tires and wheels mounted directly at my dealer, the Auto Nees in Stockstadt near Aschaffenburg. Please do not ask me or the dealership if you do not want to buy your vehicle there. The registration is no longer possible like this. By the way, they also rent out Tourne for testing.

Dimensions

  • Length: 5.998 meters
  • Width with mirror: 2.69 meters (Width without mirror: 2.05 meters)
  • Height: 2.661 meters, the Tourne mobil 335 is a few centimeters lower at 2.57 meters (different tires). Since I have now mounted All Terrain tires with 18'' wheels, my van is a bit higher.

Electronics & Electricity

Whether you actually need two solar panels and an auxiliary battery, as I do, depends on your preferences. I work a lot while traveling (more about the profession of travel blogger here). Electricity isn't always available. Additionally, I prefer to remain self-sufficient and avoid large campsites whenever possible.

  • On-board battery and auxiliary battery TAB 95AH (C20) AGM - MOTION Picture BullTron(R) LiFePO4 300Ah 12V battery Bluetooth down to -10 degrees capable of charging
  • Inverter from Renogy (3000 W - you probably don't need this, but if you're almost living and working in the van, you indulge in this luxury)
  • 2 x solar panels, total of 220 watts
  • Charging booster
  • Solar charge controller Victron Energy BlueSolar MPPT 75/10 Solar Charge Controller 12/24V 10A (not standard, can be monitored via Bluetooth)
  • On-board control with display for electricity, water, battery, waste water
  • LED light over the kitchen block
  • 12V USB connection at the back over the beds (standard)
  • 220V socket in the luggage compartment (standard)
  • 220V socket at the front of the vehicle
  • 2 additional speakers over the beds at the back
  • Reading lights in front and back (LED)
  • Ambient lighting in the back (I never use)
  • Outdoor light and rain protection Dometic Raintec RT100

Driver's Cabin

  • Radio ZENEC Z-E3766 with navigation and Apple Car Play (originally had a Kenwood with a bad display, so I swapped it out for the current - according to tests - best camper radio. Top device)
  • iPhone / iPod connection
  • USB ports
  • Bluetooth
  • Air conditioning with outside temperature display (only in the driver's cab)
  • Mobile holder from Brodit with ProClip holder
  • Instead of the completely useless flip-up holder, I bought this practical CARica charging tray Inductive (with USB & HDMI)
  • Instead of the poor tweeters, I installed this Alpine SPC-R100-DU radial speaker system

Insulation, Electricity, Water, Heating

Tourne Mobil Underfloor Heating

With the Webasto diesel heater, you can ideally regulate the heat inside. Even at 0 degrees, we only needed minimal heating. Thanks to the good insulation, it was comfortably warm all night.

It's great that the water tanks and pipes are well insulated, even though they are mounted under the vehicle.

  • Winter-ready: Insulation in the interior with Armacel Armaflex ACE + 15mm/30mm insulation
  • 30 mm floor insulation
  • Webasto diesel heater Hybrid II5 1.5kW - 4kW (draws from the tank, not from the gas supply)
  • Hot water (Whale gas water heating system Hybrid II5 1.25 kW volume 8 liters)
  • Underfloor heating
  • 100 l fresh water/waste water tank (heated and well insulated)

Kitchen

  • Refrigerator with freezer (90l, 12V)
  • 2-burner gas stove Dometic PI8062 with electronic ignition
  • Sink Dometic SNG4237 (standard)
  • Spacious drawers for spices above the kitchen block (standard)
  • Extension of the kitchen countertop

Bathroom

The bathroom is beautifully bright due to the built-in skylight. It can also be used as a drying room. A real plus for rainy days or winter campers. You can dry wet clothes on one of the six available hooks in the bathroom. The separation toilet is chemical-free and has the advantage that I can theoretically dispose of everything in normal trash. I have to empty the solid waste container much less often.

  • Shower
  • Sink
  • Cassette toilet (Thetford C233) Trelino L Separation Toilet (excellent for motorhomes and box vans in wet rooms) -
  • 6 coat hooks
  • Large mirror
  • Large cabinet
  • + Wooden insert shelf
  • + Outdoor shower

This is what my camper looks like with the Trelino L Separation Toilet (super happy with it):

Sleeping and Living Space

The transverse bed in the rear measures 1.90 x 1.40 meters. The slightly smaller bed in front measures 1.85 x 1.10 meters. Sufficient for one adult or two children. This system is patented by Tourne and is called the dream4 system.

The pull-out bench from the kitchen block is ingenious. For me, it is one of the perfect places to relax or put up your feet after taking a seat in the rotated passenger seat. It doesn't get more comfortable.

  • 4 sleeping places: Dimensions rear: 190 cm x 140 cm / Dimensions front: 185 cm x 110 cm
  • Bright furniture (Rovere Calcino Oak) made of high-quality HDF (High Density Fiber), moisture-resistant poplar boards
  • Insert parts to enlarge the table
  • Additional seat pull-out from the kitchen block (part of the dream4 system)

Windows and Blackout

Interior Blackout Curtain in the Motorhome

I admit it: I am spoiled. In Southern Germany, houses always have shutters. Thus, I am used to sleeping in darkness and prefer it. Therefore, I'm absolutely happy that the Tourne has blackout systems from Dometic on all windows.

It's also ideal that insect screens are already in place all over. Thus, you can air out without flies or mosquitoes entering the interior.

  • Driver's cabin front windshield: Dometic FP200 blackout system
  • Driver's cabin doors: Dometic Duette blackout system
  • Skylights front and back: Dometic Midi-Heki Style GD 500 x 700 mm
  • Bathroom skylight: Dometic Mini-Heki 400 x 400 mm
  • 2 windows in the "living area": Dometic S7S with blackout pleat and insect screen (thermal bridge-free frame windows for best insulation and safety)
  • 2 windows in the rear door: Dometic S7P 490 x 500
  • Insect screen at the side sliding door

Miscellaneous

  • Omnistor 6300 Awning
  • GAS Safety Valve GOK Monocontrol (Collision Protection)
  • Gas Detector CBE BMTG 12V LPG and Sleep Gas Detector
  • Webasto Control Unit MULTICONTROL ATE Series
  • + Bike rack for the tow hitch (purchased separately). Better are rails in the back from BroBIZZ. Unfortunately, the bike is 2 cm too high, or the beds are too low and have to be lifted. However, the bike is safely stored.
  • Table and chairs from Westlife (more in the article on basic equipment)
  • + Black bull bar (Black Edition)
  • + Textile-leather seats (Black Edition)
  • + Carpet in the living room (Black Edition) -> I would no longer take this. I don't need it. If you want to buy it from me, send me an email.
  • + Water outlet valve (fresh water) - important in winter
  • + Isofix (for child seats)

Everything marked with + I ordered (or it is included in the "Black Edition"). I personally don't need it, but it is built-in as standard:

  • Preparation for TV in the front of the vehicle (coaxial cable, 2x socket) (standard)
  • Electric entrance step Thule

More Information on the Tourne Mobil

There are two floor plans for the Tourne: 335 and 435. The two versions mainly differ in their equipment. The 335 has a towing capacity of only 2,500 kg, while the 435 has a towing capacity of 3,000 kg. Both are the latest models of the Peugeot Boxer with Euro norm 6.2. Update 2021: There is now a longer version with 6.40 meters and longitudinal beds. Please contact a dealer for information or check the Tourne website.

However, you should keep in mind that with the longer model, you have to pay higher prices on ferries and cannot simply park your vehicle in public parking lots.

My Conclusion and Experience Report

For this price-performance ratio, my purchase of the Tourne was unbeatable! Unfortunately, the vehicle has now become completely overpriced (like so many other campers currently). My base version costs €80,000 at fairs in 2024, otherwise around €90,000. Financing is, by the way, possible, I also did it (ask the dealer). The price obviously depends on engine performance and equipment.

What still particularly excites me: Someone really thought through the interior design! You can just tell that everything is of super quality. At the same time, everything looks super stylish. I don't want to miss my "Vinnie"!

Are you asking yourself: Hymer Sprinter or Tourne Mobil?

I can confidently say that I found some rather cheap solutions in the Hymer for that high price. My friends lived more or less in the Hymer Sprinter, and we traveled together for many weeks.

The window (and insect screen) in the bathroom of the Hymer is so small and poorly made that I am not envious at all. In the Hymer, you seem to have much less storage space (neither above the driver's seats nor in the kitchen area), and the bathroom is considerably smaller.

Only the drainage for gray water is, in my opinion, better resolved in the Hymer. But here, too, Auto Nees has found a perfect solution.

More articles on motorhomes in general, as well as my favorite road trips and routes, will follow soon.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you provide some information about the Peugeot Boxer engine? Have you had any issues?

I have not had any problems with my car to date. At first, I was only puzzled that a warning light came on indicating that there was fluid in the filter. However, this notice is outdated, as the light simply indicates that I need to refill Ad Blue.

Reports of engine problems were also found before my purchase. However, these were dated older. My model is a newer one.

Can I finance or lease my motorhome?

The answer is yes. I financed my motorhome through Santander Bank (depends on the dealer). There are various financing options that are best discussed with the bank or your dealer. I was also well advised by the dealer (Auto Nees), specifically, he knew precisely the conditions under which I wanted to finalize the financing.

Is the Tourne practical or too large?

Once you've driven the first kilometers with it, you will realize how spacious and enjoyable such a vehicle is to drive. The size is perfect and ideally suited as a "small motorhome." I didn't want a bus since I work a lot in it and travel for extended periods. When it rains, I can comfortably stay in the living area (and stand upright).

Do you also own a Tourne motorhome, or are you considering buying one? What are your experiences?

Leave a comment at the end of the article. I always appreciate feedback. Soon there will be a detailed report on the Big 5 pickup with cabin.
