Oman is a hidden gem on the Arabian Peninsula. More traditional than the Emirates, safer than Yemen, and much easier to travel through than Saudi Arabia.

Ideal for a road trip with beautiful beaches, rugged mountain ranges, impressive waterfalls, and Wadis, as well as the stunning 'Empty Quarter' of the Rub al Khali desert. I've fallen in love with this country and highly recommend a trip to Oman. Here you will find all travel reports and experiences about Oman collected on my travel blog to help you plan your Oman vacation.

Why You Must Visit Oman?

I had no idea about Oman at all. Neither did my 10 travel companions who had the opportunity to test the new route from Follow the Tracks in Oman with a car and rooftop tent. I immediately fell in love with this beautiful country and its people: Dream beaches in the south around Salalah (Dhofar region), deserts in Wahiba Sands and the Rub al Khali (Empty Quarter), as well as the ancient ruin villages with their streams and vibrant souqs.

You Love Mountains but Also the Sea and Deserts? Oman Has It All

In Oman, everyone finds what they expect from a "vacation". Mountains for hiking, lonely deserts with a brilliant starry sky, green oases and Wadis, or beautiful sandy beaches. This way, you don't have to make a choice and can enjoy a bit of everything.

Ideal Place to Escape Winter

When it gets cold and grey where we are, the conditions in Oman are perfect with pleasant daytime temperatures around 25 °C. You can also swim in the sea at warm 24 °C water temperatures even in December or snorkel or dive with turtles or dolphins. Is it too hot for you? Then you can drive into the mountains with a 4x4 vehicle: Jabal Shams (Grand Canyon of Oman) in the Hajar mountains or Jabal Akhdar. The possibilities are vast.

Great Country for a Road Trip

Oman is perfect for exploring on your own with a car. The roads are excellently maintained. If you need help, you can ask the locals. They are truly very helpful and quickly notice when you have a problem.

You have the choice of either a car and hotels or a 4x4 with a rooftop tent. We undertook a mix of both. On the stages, you can explore untouched nature and unique landscapes. We often stopped to ask ourselves if we were still on this planet. Some places looked so surreal.

Stunning Beaches in Salalah and Mirbat (Dhofar)

The region around Salalah and Mirbat is a true insider tip. Here you will find unimaginably long and white sandy beaches. Framed by palm trees, these beaches create a dreamlike backdrop straight out of a postcard. Here you can still find quiet spots where you can relax in the sun alone. Ideal with a car and rooftop tent. Because camping is allowed everywhere (at least for now).

One of the most beautiful beaches for us is Fazayah Beach, which stretches over several bays. The drive along the gravel road is worth seeing. Mughsail Beach is much busier. Here, locals spend their evenings enjoying the sunset every night.

In Mirbat, things are a bit more secluded and exclusive. Here, we spent three days at Alila Hinu Bay, almost having the beach to ourselves. With luck, you can see dolphins here, and apparently, the snorkeling and diving conditions are ideal. Next time then.

Oman is a Safe Travel Destination

In the ranking of the safest countries in the world, Oman has consistently placed 4th behind Finland, the UAE, and Iceland.

Despite its location and proximity to Yemen, Oman is a very safe travel destination. Omanis are very open to other cultures and truly helpful. Everywhere, they stopped to ask us if we needed help - and we just stopped to photograph hundreds of camels. Or we were invited for tea during our picnic break in a Wadi in Salalah. The crime rate is also very low; Omanis are doing well.

Despite the tolerance and openness towards tourists, you are in an Arab country and should therefore adhere to certain rules and customs. As a woman, you should keep your shoulders and knees covered, avoid showing affection in public, and refrain from drinking alcohol in public.

For the Active: Canyoning in Wadis

Wadi Bani Khalid Oman

You can explore the deep gorges between the mountains through canyoning tours. The most easily accessible Wadi is Wadi Bani Khalid. Here you can leisurely swim in the natural pools.

There Is Currently No Mass Tourism Here

Not many travelers have the Oman on their radar yet. So take the time to explore this wonderful country without encountering mass tourism. There are no huge hotel complexes like in Dubai, as buildings must not be taller than a palm tree or mosque. Also, the beaches are not yet overcrowded. Oman is not cheap, and the focus here is more on quality tourism rather than mass tourism. We think that's a good thing.

Oman is Closer than You Think

From Germany (Frankfurt), it is only 7 flight hours to Muscat (just 6.5 hours from Munich). The flight from Muscat to Salalah takes 1 hour and 40 minutes. For entry, you only need your passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months. Staying longer than 14 days? Then you need to apply for an e-visa for Oman online in advance. This is quick and was approved for us within two hours. However, it costs approximately $50.
