Are you currently planning a city trip to New York? Congratulations, I love New York! There's just one problem: The city is so vast that it's hard to know what to see. Right? That's why I really enjoy using a travel guide for planning.

But here's the dilemma: Which is the best travel guide for New York? Because there are as many guides for this city as there are grains of sand at Coney Island. Whether in print or as an online guide, some are even free, like my travel reports on New York. I've been to New York many times and own at least eight New York travel guides. I constantly compare the content and tips for the ultimate insider tip for New York that I haven't discovered yet. Therefore, I've taken the time to test travel guides and present them here. In this guide, you'll find many useful tips organized by neighborhoods that aren't included in the other guides. Many insider tips for New York can also be found in the Lonely Planet. However, I often wonder how long an insider tip remains an insider tip when it's featured in the world-renowned Lonely Planet.

If you prefer travel guides with a lot of images, the Lonely Planet may not be the right choice for you. Besides maps (over 50 of them) and directions, there are only a few photos within the Lonely Planet.

A popular series of unique travel guides is the 111 Places You Must See Guides by Dumont. I found great locations and hints for New York that I wouldn't have visited otherwise. An absolute buying recommendation for anyone who wants to explore the city off the beaten path.

A special guide is "111 Shops in New York You Must Experience." Oh yes, this guide includes not only unique shops but also fantastic café and restaurant tips. Simply quite special and more or less New York insider tips that not everyone knows.
