Are you planning a trip to Namibia and wondering when the best time to go is? Whether for safaris, photography, or experiencing the unique nature - the ideal time to visit Namibia varies. In this article, I have shared my experiences on which month is best suited for your interests and when you can experience the highlights of Namibia without compromise.

Key Takeaways

There isn't a single best time for Namibia for me. Everything has its appeal.

Namibia offers a hot desert climate with a long dry season from April to November, making it an ideal travel window for outdoor activities and wildlife observation.

The best time for wildlife observation in Namibia is during the dry season, especially from August to September.

For photography, the months of March and April are optimal, as the air is clear and conditions are perfect for stunning landscape and wildlife photography.

Careful travel planning is essential in Namibia, mainly regarding timely bookings for accommodations and transportation.

Safety is particularly important in larger cities, and you should avoid driving at night.

Winter is from May to September. Daytime temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius, at night sometimes even below 0 degrees.

Summer is from October to April. Temperatures up to 35 degrees.

Recommended travel times: April-May and August to October, because it's not too hot.

It's extremely hot from December to March.

The indigenous people of Namibia once said it was a land without people between the deserts. It almost seems true as we leave Windhoek in our Toyota Hilux with a rooftop tent. The distances between one place and another quickly become vast. There is hardly any traffic on the roads.

Here you can enjoy vast, almost empty spaces and experience Namibia's extreme weather conditions. Many write to me wanting to know when I was there and what the best time for a vacation in Namibia is. Therefore, you will find my recommendations here:

Namibia's Climate and Weather: Differences in the Seasons

Namibia is known for its hot desert climate characterized by dry, warm, and sunny conditions prevailing throughout the year.

The climate in Namibia is defined by two main seasons: a long dry season and a short rainy season, characterized by a subtropical continental climate.

The rainy season extends from December to March, peaking between January and March. During this time, daytime temperatures inland can reach a scorching 30-35 degrees Celsius, causing severe flooding that affects road conditions. However, after the rains, the sun quickly comes out and dries the land.

The dry season in Namibia runs from April to November, marked by dry weather with many hours of sunshine, pleasant temperatures, and a low number of rainy days. During this time, traveling in Namibia is particularly enjoyable as the weather is ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and wildlife observation.

The Namibian winter, lasting from June to August, offers cool temperatures, especially in the early morning hours, which contrasts sharply with the rest of the months. This is important information for travel planning, as it is advisable to prepare for the cool morning hours and pack appropriate clothing. No one believes me, but a thin down jacket and wool hat are beneficial for early morning game drives.

I enjoy the end of the dry season from late September.

But no matter what you plan: witnessing a magical sunset over the red sand dunes of the Namib Desert or the unique wildlife in parks like Etosha National Park offers an experience for every traveler, regardless of the time of year.

Best Time for Wildlife Observation

The wildlife is one of the highlights and reasons for any trip to Namibia. Elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes - they all are part of the rich ecosystem that this country has to offer. The best time for wildlife observation in Namibia is during the dry season from April to September, as conditions for safaris are optimal.

I especially recommend the period from August to September for safaris, as the animals must regularly visit waterholes due to the intense dryness. This makes observation easier, as the animals concentrate around the few remaining watercourses and watering holes. If it's your first time in Southern Africa, these months are indeed ideal.

But which regions are particularly recommended for wildlife observation? Let's take a look at the fascinating world of wildlife observation.

Etosha National Park

One of the best places for wildlife observation in Namibia is Etosha National Park. The best time to visit this park for wildlife observation is from May to September during the dry season, when animals come to the few remaining waterholes.

Etosha National Park is home to a diverse wildlife, including free-roaming desert elephants and lions, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife photography.

Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Region)

My insider tip and another highlight for wildlife observation in Namibia is the Caprivi Strip in the far northeastern part of the country. The ideal climate for a visit to the Zambezi region, formerly known as Caprivi, is between May and August, as this offers mild weather without the heat and humidity of the summer months.

This region is known for its high humidity and frequent rains, which distinguishes it significantly from other parts of Namibia.

Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari Desert is a very impressive region for wildlife observation in Namibia. This highland region in the eastern part of Namibia is characterized by vast sandy areas.

A visit to the Kalahari Desert is ideal in the Namibian winter between June and July, when daytime temperatures are pleasant. In summer, it is extremely hot, with temperatures even reaching 40 degrees during September. Be sure to pack plenty of water and food. It's not uncommon for you to get stuck in isolation and only receive help the next day.

Rainy Season in Namibia

Lack of Rain for Many Years!

Due to years without rain, there is a severe water shortage in many places. You as a tourist usually notice this only by the water being extremely salty, as very deep groundwater serves as the water source and is also desalinated - which doesn't always succeed well.

General Info on the Climate

First, you need to know that while it's summer in Germany, it's winter in Namibia. The seasons are therefore exactly reversed from ours.

Since Namibia is a large country, different climatic conditions prevail in different regions. In particular, there are significant temperature differences that you need to consider. Precipitation is, as mentioned above, very rare. And when it does rain, the water often evaporates before reaching the ground.

In the Namib Desert, extreme conditions always prevail. The hottest months are December and January, often exceeding 40 degrees. In winter (June - August), it is a pleasant 25 degrees. We found September very pleasant at 28 degrees. October was similar. Even at night, temperatures were comfortable.

The further north you go towards Angola and Caprivi, the more humid and warmer it gets. The weather in the far northeast is tropical. Humidity can be very high, and it is hot.

At night it can still be quite cool. After a hot night in the rooftop tent and removing the blanket from the linen sheet, I was glad in the next night that I could return to a blanket. In the Caprivi Strip, heavy rains can occur that flood everything briefly. I did not have a rain jacket with me anyway.
