Hamburg
Hamburg, the city on the Elbe River, with Alster and the fish market, is simply lovable. Hamburg consistently ranks among the most livable and favorite cities in Germany in all surveys. To me, Hamburg is the most beautiful city in Germany.
Highlights include, in addition to the places mentioned above, the Speicherstadt (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Elbphilharmonie, HafenCity, and the Reeperbahn. Hamburg also offers a particularly wide range of culinary options. You can find out more in the Hamburg Food Guide.

Lübeck
The Hanseatic city of Lübeck is the largest city in Schleswig-Holstein. Lübeck has one of the most beautiful medieval old towns, and it's so compact that you can explore it comfortably on foot. Are you familiar with 'Buddenbrooks' by Thomas Mann? The Nobel Prize winner comes from Lübeck and set his novel here!
Tip: Ideal as a day trip if you are vacationing on the Baltic Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein (for example, Fehmarn)
Don't Miss in Lübeck:
- The Holstentor, the landmark of Lübeck
- The small shopping street Hüxstraße with many small shops and eateries to browse, eat, and drink

Eastern Germany
Berlin
Many people would assume to find this city further up, right? We love the German capital and the most populous city in Germany too. Every year, I visit Berlin several times to meet friends and explore new cultural highlights. Because you can find countless in Berlin.
Besides the well-known historical attractions such as the Bundestag, Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, or the Jewish Museum, there is so much more that you must visit. The most exciting of all German cities.
Don't Miss These Places in Berlin:
- Ride your bike along the Spree River. Alternatively, take a boat tour on the Spree!
- Experience hidden bunkers on an underground bunker tour. Super exciting!
- Explore street art in Berlin. Best to discover with a local.

Schwerin
The state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is simply a highlight in the northeasternmost federal state of Germany. You should not miss the old town, Lake Schwerin, and Schwerin Castle. Around the marketplace with all its historic buildings or in the castle garden, it is particularly beautiful. You can take excursions to Wiligrad Castle or go on a bike tour around Lake Schwerin.
Here are my attractions in Schwerin
Wismar
Wismar is, for me, the most beautiful city on the Baltic Sea. Especially the old town, the marketplace with the town hall, water art, and 'Alter Schwede' as well as the World Heritage House and the Old Harbor are great places. You should definitely explore Wismar.
Here you will find all Wismar attractions with tips.
Don't Miss These Beautiful Places in Weimar:
The city of Goethe is a cozy small town in Thuringia. The Bauhaus Museum is also worth seeing, which I was very excited about as an art enthusiast.

- City Castle Weimar
- Bauhaus Museum
- Buchenwald Memorial near Weimar

Rostock
Most people only drive past Rostock when heading to Rügen or Usedom on the Baltic Sea. I thoroughly enjoyed Rostock. Maybe it's a hidden gem when it comes to the most beautiful cities in Germany. Also, the proximity to the beach in Warnemünde or the Ghost Forest in Nienhagen makes my heart race for Rostock. One of my highlights on the Baltic Sea in Germany.
Here you will find my favorite sights in Rostock.
Potsdam
Potsdam is known as the 'City of Palaces and Gardens' and is located right next to Berlin. Still, the city is often overlooked by younger city travelers. Potsdam is mainly known for Sanssouci Palace and the Potsdam Film Museum.

Leipzig must undoubtedly be counted among the most beautiful cities in Germany. The Saxon city is an ideal travel destination to experience a mix of historical sights, old alleys, and a vibrant hipster scene in the neighborhoods of Connewitz and Plagwitz. The 'new' Berlin, as Leipzig has been called for the past 2-3 years, is still quite different and unique.

Erfurt
The medieval city immediately charmed me. The historic center is quite well preserved, the Erfurt Cathedral is impressive, the Krämerbrücke has an Italian flair, the Petersberg Citadel, and the Thuringian cuisine that you must try. Erfurt is not a metropolis but rather one of the cozy small towns, and I like that.
These Beautiful Places You Must Not Miss in Erfurt:
- Krämerbrücke, one of the oldest inhabited bridges in Europe, surrounded by half-timbered houses
- St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Severus Church

Southern Germany
Heidelberg
Heidelberg is the university city in Baden-Württemberg. That's why I always enjoy being in the pubs of the old town or on the banks of the Neckar. I love the view from the Philosopher's Path overlooking the Neckar, the castle, and the old town. If you want to go all the way up, you need to hike on the sunny side of the Heiligenberg to the Thingstätte, and on the other side, pass the castle over the Heavenly Ladder with 1,200 steps! Heidelberg is perfect for a relaxed weekend trip or for a week of city-hopping with Karlsruhe and Mannheim. Both cities are very close to Heidelberg and are easily accessible by public transport.
Don't Miss These in Heidelberg:
- Hiking on the Philosopher's Path
- The old town, one of the most beautiful old towns in Germany!
- Chilling on the banks of the Neckar in summer
- Visit the castle during the day and enjoy the Heidelberg Castle illumination in the evening

Munich
The most beautiful city in Germany? The people of Munich are particularly proud of their hometown! Admittedly, we only grew to love Munich on our 2nd or 3rd visit.
Whether lounging pleasantly by the Isar, sitting in one of the many cafés, or enjoying Bavarian beer in one of the numerous beer halls: Everyone has their favorite. The best way to explore the city is by bike.
Don't Miss These in Munich:
- Surfers on the Eisbach Wave in the English Garden
- Culinary stroll through the Viktualienmarkt
- Visit a beer garden
- The Glockenspiel in the New Town Hall at Marienplatz, the city's landmark (next to the Old Town Hall)

Freiburg
Freiburg, the city in Germany with the most hours of sunshine. Did you know that? There are over 1700 hours of sunshine here annually! The Baden green city is simply everything in one. Somewhat rural and also hip, not too large and simply cozy.
And especially the small streams that flow through the old town are typical for the region.
In terms of environmental protection, Freiburg im Breisgau is at the forefront, beautifying many roofs of public buildings with solar panels! This green city is a leader in sustainability in Germany. Wide bike paths are a big plus, which many other city dwellers dream of.
Due to its location west of the Black Forest, a visit to Freiburg is ideal in combination with trips to the Black Forest.
Don't Miss These Tips in Freiburg:
- Freiburg Cathedral and the Cathedral Square
- The 'Hausberg' of Freiburg: Schauinsland. Leave the city and take the gondola up.
- Archaeological Museum Colombischlössle
Population: 230,241
Tübingen
The 'small big city' of poets and thinkers: Tübingen. Only an hour by train from Stuttgart, Tübingen offers one of the oldest universities in Germany, plenty of half-timbered houses, a picturesque old town with many cafés and bars for hanging out, as well as the unspoiled Neckar River with its famous stocherkahn boats, offering plenty of great places. By the way, a whole 30% of the 91,000 residents are students, which gives Tübingen a particularly lively flair that I really like.
Don't Miss These Attractions in Tübingen:
- Walk through the old town and admire the well-preserved buildings
- The town hall with its beautiful façade and astronomical clock
- The view from one of the bridges over the Neckar
- The pretty Neckar front with gorgeous houses and the stocherkahn boats
- Visit the Hölderlinturm on the Neckar front (and visit the museum)
- Hohentübingen Castle with museum and view from the 12th century

Heilbronn
Finally, my hometown (and also an underrated city!) Heilbronn makes it onto the list of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Surrounded by vineyards and the Neckar River, the city has so many beautiful places to offer that I highly recommend a visit.
Don't Miss These Attractions in Heilbronn:
- The Experimenta
- Visit a 'Besenwirtschaft': A winemaker's tavern that serves wine and food for a certain period once a month; it doesn't get cozier than this.
- A bike tour through the vineyards or along the Neckar
- City tour 'quarter past six'
Population: 178,089

Western Germany
Cologne
Even though Cologne may seem a bit rundown in many places: The city is a must! Old town, Cologne Cathedral, Rhine promenade with shores and many beautiful museums.
Do you love Carnival? Then visiting Cologne is a must! However, we tend to avoid the cathedral city at this time of year. Hannah has regularly fled during her many years in Cologne.
Don't Miss These Attractions in Cologne:
- Enjoy the view from the top of Cologne Cathedral
- Cologne's old town and the Rhine shore
- Brewery houses for Kölsch beer

Frankfurt am Main
Frankfurt is ugly and only has bankers and snobs? That's the common impression many visitors have. In our opinion, you only need to know where to go in Frankfurt am Main! Because Frankfurt really has beautiful corners. Especially the freshly renovated streets of the old town around the Römer and the town hall are truly worth seeing!
Don't Miss These Tips in Frankfurt am Main:
- Freshly renovated and newly built historic old town around the Römer and town hall
- Bridge by the ECB - perfect skyline view
- A must-try when visiting: Merals Döner Boat on the Main shore
- Gourmet treats at Kleinmarkthalle
-> These are the places and sights you must not miss in Frankfurt
Trier
Trier is the oldest city in Germany. Did you know that? Founded as early as 16 BC (!) by the Romans under the name 'Augusta Treverorum'. That's why you'll find so many Roman-era buildings here as in hardly any other city. A total of nine UNESCO World Heritage buildings are located in Trier!
Don't Miss These Attractions in Trier:
- Porta Nigra, the symbol of the city, known to every German by name
- An absolute must in Trier: St. Peter's, the oldest bishop's church in Germany
- Excursions to Moselle Valley and the famous wine-growing area or the nearby Eifel
Population: 111,138
Münster
Münster is known as a bicycle city and a student city. That's why I enjoy it here so much. The attractions aren't as famous as those in other cities, and sometimes that's actually a good thing. Just let yourself drift.
Don't Miss These Attractions in Münster:
- The most beautiful park in Germany: Aaseepark, near the open-air museum Mühlenhof
- Kreuzviertel with its Art Nouveau villas
- Prinzipalmarkt and the oldest street in Münster
Population: 320,946
FAQ about the Most Beautiful Cities in Germany
