Madeira - the 'Island of Eternal Spring' - will surely captivate you with its spectacular landscapes, lush vegetation, and breathtaking coastlines. Whether you are on adventurous Levada hikes, exploring idyllic villages, or gazing out over the Atlantic from steep cliffs, Madeira offers countless highlights for everyone.

In this guide, I will show you the most beautiful attractions on Madeira - from impressive viewpoints to fascinating natural spectacles and the best experiences. Additionally, you will receive valuable tips to make your trip unforgettable.

Note: You can explore all these places in one week in Madeira (check out my travel report).

Hike at Ponta de São Lourenço

This easternmost promontory of Madeira offers a stunning coastal landscape with rugged cliffs and unique vegetation. The well-marked hiking trail leads you through nearly untouched nature and rewards you with spectacular views of the Atlantic.

Start as early as possible in the morning, my highlight.

Cliffs of Cabo Girão

At 580 meters high, the cliffs of Cabo Girão are among the highest sea cliffs in Europe. The glass skywalk platform offers a dizzying view into the depths and at the Fajãs below. Quite impressive, and not everyone can step onto the glass floor without hesitation regarding the view below.

Food Tour in Funchal with Mercado dos Lavradores

Arriving in Madeira is best done with a food tour in Funchal. We were able to taste the island's specialties and received great, non-touristic restaurant tips. By the end of the tour, we knew where to find the best Pastéis de Nata (flaky pastries with incredibly delicious cream filling) and in which bar you could enjoy the traditional Madeira drink Poncha (sugarcane schnapps with orange and lemon).

The food tour with Madeira Exquisite Food on Foot Tours is a must.

Located in the heart of Funchal, the Mercado dos Lavradores market is a feast for the senses, though very touristy. Go directly to the first floor, where you can discover exotic fruits, fresh fish, and local specialties. The guided food tour offers you a chance to experience Madeiran cuisine authentically and visit the market's "best stalls."

  • You can find all the stops of our food tour through Funchal in our Madeira guide in the shop.
  • We booked the tour with Madeira Exquisite Food on Foot Tours spontaneously a day in advance online.
  • Tour: Introducing Funchal to the World - Food & Cultural Tour
  • Duration: 4 hours, Cost for 2 people: 158 Euros

Relaxation in the Lava Pools of Porto Moniz

These natural sea water pools, shaped by solidified lava, invite you for a refreshing swim. Surrounded by bizarre rock formations and the open sea, a visit to the lava pools is an unforgettable experience. For me, it's a highlight in the north of Madeira.

Sunrise and Hike at Pico do Arieiro

As Madeira's third-highest peak at 1,818 meters, Pico do Arieiro offers breathtaking views, especially at sunrise. The hike from here to Pico Ruivo is considered one of the most beautiful on the island.

Botanical Garden Funchal

The Jardim Botanico Funchal is one of Madeira's best-known gardens and offers you an impressive collection of exotic plants. The garden, which evolved from a former private villa, is easily reachable by cable car from Funchal.

You can also visit the Monte Palace Tropical Garden if you want to see even more flowers and plants. This can be reached by cable car to Monte.

Hike along Levada das 25 Fontes

This popular Levada hike leads you through lush vegetation to the "25 sources," which flow into a crystal-clear lake. A dream destination for nature and photography lovers. Here you will find my detailed report on the hike:

Hike Levada dos Balcões

An easy hiking trail leads from Ribeiro Frio to a viewpoint, from which you have a stunning view of the Ribeiro Frio Valley and the surrounding mountains. Ideal for a relaxed outing in nature (three kilometers round trip, no elevation gain) along the Levada to Vereda dos Balcões (hike PR11 Levada dos Balcões).

You can expect a beautiful view into the valley and very tame birds that can be fed by hand. On this route, there is also a bistro with really fair prices and a great view. We paid 15 Euros for two local sandwiches and two non-alcoholic beers.

CR7 Museum

In Funchal is the museum of the island's most famous son: Cristiano Ronaldo. Here you can admire trophies, jerseys, and personal items from the soccer star. Of course, you should take a picture with the statue, which does not resemble him at all. Funny the spot where most people reach for the photo.

The museum is only for real football and Ronaldo fans.

Caves of São Vicente

These volcanic caves in northern Madeira offer a fascinating insight into the geological formation of the island. During a guided tour, you explore underground lava pathways and learn more about volcanic activities.

Don't miss in São Vicente: Capelinha de Nossa Senhora de Fátima

The Capelinha de Nossa Senhora de Fátima is a small highlight on Instagram. If you climb the many stair steps, a beautiful view over the entire valley awaits you. If you have a drone, you can capture incredibly beautiful shots and play with the perspective.

Cable Car Ride to Monte

The cable car ride from Funchal up to Monte offers breathtaking panoramic views over the city and the sea. Once at the top, besides the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, other attractions await you.

Overrated: Toboggan Ride from Monte to Funchal

Although known as a traditional attraction, I find the toboggan ride overrated. The short distance and relatively high price lead to disappointment for many friends. We watched the "spectacle" and consider it completely unnecessary. It's worth weighing beforehand whether this experience meets your personal expectations.

Also overrated: Houses of Santana

Santana Old Houses Madeira overrated

The houses of Santana with their colorful, thatched roofs seem idyllic, but are mostly reconstructed tourist attractions - the locals have long since moved into modern houses. Anyone seeking authentic insights into the traditional life on Madeira will be disappointed here, as the huts primarily serve as photo ops and souvenir shops.

Madeira offers a wealth of other attractions and activities. This selection is based on my personal experiences and is intended to inspire you for your trip. Immerse yourself in the diversity of this wonderful island and let its beauty enchant you.

You will find many more highlights in my other reports for Madeira, as well as unpublished places in my Madeira map for Google Maps:
