Even on my first visit shortly after the reunification (a long time ago), Leipzig captured my heart. Since then, we have all been back multiple times to explore new places and tips from you dear readers. Leipzig has a vibrant art scene - both urban and contemporary. Time and again, we discover new cafés and restaurants as well as small workshops and shops.

Leipzig has so much more to offer than just the well-known attractions (which you should still see on your first visit). In this article, we will share our insider tips for Leipzig. Places that you recommended to us.

KarLi - Karl-Liebknecht-Street

Have you heard about 'KarLi', the Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse? This area is buzzing with scene charm, featuring pubs, cafés, and workshops like Goldstein & Co., located on the 'Feinkost' grounds.

Since 2007, old and new furniture pieces have been lovingly restored, assembled, and showcased in a loft with an attached workshop. Here, you can fall in love with a different piece of furniture every minute (the Goldsteiner rascals know that well).

Those enchanted by interiors can enjoy street art, coffee, or open-air cinema at the Feinkost grounds - or keep the vibe alive at the club 'Absturz'.

The KarLi has a collection of small, unique cafés, bars, and pubs. It's ideal for an evening in the southern part of the city.

Shopping Tips

Here you will find great shops in the downtown area and outside the center that I discovered during my visit.

  • Saltoflorale: This wonderful flower shop calls itself "Master Floristry". The flowers and unique bouquets (or maybe it was the scent) drew us into the courtyard of the Fregehaus. Address: Katharinenstraße 11. Website
  • Bierothek: The city's first beer shop was initially called Bierfreunde, then Bierothek. The first stop for the male travel companion. Address: Katharinenstraße 11. Website.

Attractions in and Around Leipzig

Cospudener Lake Leipzig

Do you have more time in Leipzig? Then I suggest one thing: Get out into nature!

For swimming enthusiasts, Leipzig offers countless opportunities for refreshment. Especially on hot summer days, Cospudener Lake (a recreational area with a beach and landscape park) provides a cool escape! The area opened on June 1, 2000, at the Expo.

The lake is very popular with sailors, windsurfers, kitesurfers, inline skaters, and cyclists.

Zwenkauer Lake offers many little-visited bathing spots. The water here is incredibly clear, and you will definitely find a quiet place to rest and unwind. Behind the port of Zwenkau, you can bike along a small path directly to the water.

The Kulkwitzer Lake in the west of Leipzig is also suitable for a variety of leisure activities. In summer, Kulkwitzer Lake is a popular swimming destination, and on the Miltitzer side, there is even a water ski facility.

Food, Drink, and Nightlife

Coffee & Breakfast

Did you know that Leipzig is often referred to as "Coffee Saxony"? I was unfamiliar with the term before my trip.

Tips in the Center

In Leipzig, you will find the oldest coffee house in Germany named "Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum", whose historic rooms now serve as a museum.

Currently, the café, restaurant, and museum are closed for renovations. It is expected to reopen in early 2021. Address: Kleine Fleischergasse 4. View details on the website

  • Café Riquet: Elephant heads decorate the entrance of this traditional café! The interior is a historic landmark - just the building itself is worth seeing! Otherwise, it attracts more tourists than locals here.
  • Luise Café & Bar: Breakfast, brunch, lunch, or hot meals until 10 PM.
  • Handbrotzeit:
  • Café Gloria: Small, but very nice café next to Thomas Church, in the house of the Bach Museum. Great breakfast and very good coffee!
  • Café Kandler: More than 80 varieties of tea, a large selection of coffee, and delicious Lerchen (a Leipzig specialty: shortcrust pastry filled with tasty jam or marzipan)
  • Veganz: Vegan supermarket in the center. Address: Nikolaistraße 53
  • Goodies: Even non-vegans will find a visit worthwhile. Same address as Veganz
  • Hearty meals are available at Pilot
  • You can get huge ice cream sundaes at Milchbar Pinguin

Spätis in Leipzig

I love Spätis, maybe also because this type of kiosk doesn't exist in my home in southern Germany. There are quite a few of them in Leipzig. The ones I visited are marked on the Leipzig map.

  • Südplatz Späti: An institution in Leipzig's southern suburb. A large selection of drinks as well as magazines and periodicals.
  • Lazy Dog in the alternative district Connewitz. Drinks, sweets, vegan and fresh groceries.
  • Salz & Tabak: An Italian Späti in the center.

Nightlife and Bars

The most well-known venues for live music are Moritzbastei and Täubchenthal.

First Time in Leipzig? Sightseeing Tips

This is how you explore the city best:

  • Start with a city tour around the marketplace in the Old Town and discover the highlights
  • Explore the coffee houses in the city center
  • Discover notable places around Augustusplatz
  • The hipster area in the south around KarLi
  • Old factories with innovative ideas in Plagwitz
  • Völkerschlacht Monument, Grassimuseum, and Jewish life in the Waldstraßenviertel
  • Head to the lakes or through the Auenwald, the green lung of the city
