My Kenya Guide: Travel Blog for Tips in the Safari Land of East Africa

Kenya is one of the most famous and popular safari countries in Africa. Alongside South Africa, Namibia, and Tanzania, it attracts many tourists each year to the East African country, particularly to visit the incredible wildlife and variety of the Masai Mara. The small part of the Serengeti (Tanzania) is known for its unbelievably large animal population. It is considered one of the richest areas for wildlife in East Africa, and I have always wanted to come here.

The capital Nairobi is worth a visit, as well as Amboseli National Park and Tsavo West National Park, which are often recommended to me as hidden gems. So far, I have only been to Nairobi and the Masai reserves (not the Masai Mara National Reserve) to attend a 14-day EcoQuest ranger course with EcoTraining Kenya to learn about the wildlife and, above all, the culture of the Masai.

Kenya Travel Tips

Here are some of the most important travel tips for Kenya at a glance. I've written down how to plan a trip to Kenya and what you need to keep in mind.

How Long to Plan for Kenya?

Ideally, you have at least 10 to 14 days available. You can then explore the highlights either on your own or preferably with a good provider. I spent two weeks alone in one part of the Masai Mara to attend an EcoQuest ranger course (in 14 days) with EcoTraining. Before that, we explored Nairobi for two days.

Getting to Kenya

With Lufthansa, you can reach Nairobi on a direct flight. You can also find affordable open-jaw flights, which I tend to skip (climate protection).

BOOK FLIGHTS ✈️ We always search for cheap flights on Kayak. Here you can find my tips for booking cheap flights. Make sure to indicate that you have checked baggage, as basic fares only include hand luggage. This can initially distort the price, making it appear cheaper.

Money and Currency

You can pay either with Kenyan Shillings or US Dollars. For the latter, be sure to carry only new and reasonably intact notes. ATMs are rare, especially in rural areas, so it's a good idea to bring a bit more cash.

Currently, the best free travel credit cards are the DKB Bank Debit Card, GenialCard (Hanseatic Bank), and the Mastercard Gold from TF Bank. With a setup of at least 2 of these cards, you can almost always withdraw money at ATMs abroad for free and pay locally without foreign transaction fees on foreign currencies!

Traveling Around the Country

A rental car or a car with a driver are the best options for getting around the country. Driving times are long, and the roads outside the highways are quite bumpy and poorly maintained - make sure to plan enough time. Check out Diamir, as they can organize your perfect round trip just the way you want it. Alternatively, you should look into EcoTraining. I spent two weeks in the Masai Mara here. There are also 7-day EcoQuest courses for anyone who wants to see and learn more.
