Are you traveling soon and want to use Google Maps offline on your phone? In this article, I will show you how to download maps and navigate offline. I'll guide you step by step because Google Maps is a very practical tool for our daily navigation, whether it's finding the fastest way to the train station or checking the current traffic situation. Google Maps has also become increasingly important for our travel plans, whether it's for a trip through Uzbekistan, a road trip in Iceland, or a city trip to New York.

When traveling abroad, not only can high roaming charges occur, but you may also have a poor data connection or be completely offline. In such situations, the normal use of Google Maps is not an option. Therefore, we present a step-by-step guide on how to download Google Maps for offline use. This makes navigation while traveling easier than ever.

Download the maps when you have a good internet connection or are connected to Wi-Fi.

Downloaded offline maps are valid for 30 days and should be updated regularly to ensure current information about locations.

Offline navigation has limitations, such as the lack of current traffic information and routes for public transport; there are also alternative apps for offline navigation (which I rarely use).

Fortunately, you can save specific maps for countries or cities from Google Maps on your phone to use them offline. Once you do this while connected to the internet or Wi-Fi, you can switch to airplane mode and no longer worry about expensive phone bills or poor internet connections. Just download everything you need over your Wi-Fi connection before you start your trip or leave your accommodation.

Tip: Make sure you have downloaded the Google Maps app on your phone and that you are signed in to your Google account. To download maps, you must be connected to the internet. (Download for iOS / Android)

It is essential to log in to the Google Maps app with your Google account. This is an important step, as only signed-in users have the ability to download and manage offline maps.

Downloading Google Maps Offline for iPhone

Follow these steps to save Google Maps offline on your iPhone so you have maps and directions at your destination. Be careful not to use incognito mode.

  • Open the Google Maps app
  • Search for a large area (e.g., a region in Iceland, South Africa, or Uzbekistan) or a specific city like New York or Chicago.
  • In the upper right corner, you will see your profile picture. Tap this button and select Offline Maps.
  • Then choose "Select your map".
  • Zoom in or out on the area for which you want to download maps (it will show how much storage this will take on your phone).
  • Press download at the bottom right of the page.
  • Alternatively: Search for the region, country, or city, for example, "Manhattan."
  • Under the result, buttons like "Route," Save, ... Scroll all the way to the right until "Download Offline Map" appears. Click on it.
  • Next, click "Download" or adjust the map section and then click on Download.

You can update, delete, or edit the names of your saved offline maps in the Offline Maps menu. Click on the three dots behind the map.

How to Save Google Maps Offline for Android

Using Google Maps offline is just as easy for Android phone users; just follow these instructions.

  • Open the Google Maps app
  • Search for the area you want to download
  • Click on your profile picture in the upper right corner
  • Select Offline Map from the dropdown menu
  • Click on Select your own map (or choose from a list of maps recommended by Google)
  • Zoom in or out on the area for which you want to download maps (it will show how much storage this will take on your phone).
  • Press download at the bottom right.

Automatic Updating of Offline Maps

Offline maps are currently valid for 1 year. To have the most current locations available offline, I have activated the automatic update feature, so I always have the latest information from the downloaded maps. Therefore, I recommend that you also enable this feature. While you can manually update the maps, you often forget to do so (see screenshots for both options).

Manual update: Access the Offline Maps menu and click on the three dots next to the map you want to update. However, if you automate this process, you can skip the manual updating.

  • Click on your profile picture in the upper right corner of the page
  • Select Offline Maps from the menu
  • Click on the "gear" icon in the upper right corner of the page
  • Make sure the option to automatically update offline maps is activated.
  • Enable updating only via Wi-Fi.

This means that your maps are updated automatically with the latest information as soon as you next have a Wi-Fi connection.

Note: I also don't know why sometimes it says offline maps and other times it says offline maps in Google Maps. It's the same term.

How to Use Google Maps Offline

Once you have downloaded all the maps you need for your travels, you can now use them offline! Just go to the app, click on your profile picture in the upper right corner, click on Offline Maps, and select the downloaded map you need. You can then use Google Maps just like usual, whether you want to explore the highlights in New York, the rice terraces of Bali, or the many waterfalls in Iceland.

Here's how to use the offline maps:

  • The GPS feature for driving routes that shows your location while driving on the map
  • Step-by-step voice navigation and estimated travel times
  • Search for services like restaurants, supermarkets, cafés, gas stations, and ATMs
  • Save/star your favorite places for later

For downloaded offline maps, there are a few things to keep in mind that present minor drawbacks.

1. Storage Space on Your Smartphone

Downloading offline maps can take up a lot of storage space on your phone. Make sure you have enough storage space before you try to download anything. On Android smartphones, you can save maps to an external SD card. This is not possible on iPhones.

I recommend deleting offline maps you no longer need as soon as you're done using them.

2. Rename Your Maps

Edit the names of your maps (which are automatically saved as map 1, map 2, etc., see picture above). To avoid confusion and allow for quick and easy selection while you're on the go, you should rename the map immediately after downloading it.

3. Update Google Maps

Download or update your maps before you head out to get the latest data for the area in question, or enable the automatic updating settings. Most downloaded maps are valid for a whole year. Only then are they deleted. Occasionally remove maps that you no longer need to keep your phone's storage from getting full.

4. Offline Features

Not all features of Google Maps are available offline. Routes for public transport as well as bicycle and pedestrian routes are not available in offline maps. Offline navigation in Google Maps is limited to car routes, thus excluding other transport methods. In your offline navigation, you cannot access traffic information or alternative routes. This may lead to inaccurate estimated arrival times, as current traffic events are not accounted for.

Note: Before departure, check whether the destination can actually be saved offline. Some areas of the world cannot currently be downloaded offline (e.g., Brazil). Plan ahead just in case.

Getting Started

Despite the minor limitations of the offline settings, it is worthwhile to download Google Maps for offline use. This allows you to navigate easily and conveniently without an internet connection. This is really helpful when you are in a foreign city without a functioning SIM card or face a language barrier that prevents you from asking for directions. Japan is a good example.

We have started publishing our private lists of sights, restaurants, cafés, insider tips, and accommodations. In these, you'll find much more advice than in the free blog posts. Here you can see, with our map for Iceland as an example, how many spots we visited and saved. With just one click, you can also use this map offline on your next trip. This way, you can see where the next waterfall, the next highlight, or a cool campsite is. Check out all our guides as maps for your next trip.

While Google Maps is an excellent option for offline navigation, there are also other apps that offer similar functions. MapsMe, Waze, and Here WeGo are three popular alternatives that offer offline navigation features and are reliable options compared to Google Maps.

OsmAnd is another app that uses OpenStreetMap data and provides full offline functionality for navigation. Sygic allows users to download maps for a variety of countries and navigate offline. CoPilot GPS is an app that offers offline maps and route planning for car navigation. CityMaps2Go offers offline maps and additional information about sights and restaurants.

These alternatives can be a good complement or even an alternative to Google Maps, depending on your specific needs and preferences.
