Honestly, there is no wrong time to visit the Garden Route and Cape Town. Depending on the activities you plan, each travel season has something to offer you. I have been here in all seasons and would also come again in winter, as by the end of August, the flowers start to bloom and everything becomes colorful.

Summary

The optimal travel time for a journey along the Garden Route by the Indian Ocean is from September to April.

The peak season is during the South African summer holidays from Christmas to mid-January.

Spring begins in September and autumn starts in April. These months are also acceptable, though it can be very windy.

In winter (July and August), it rains the most on average, and in June you have the fewest sunshine hours during the day. It can be pleasantly warm during the day. A jacket is definitely a must-pack.

I love the months from January to March. I enjoy the heat, and by mid-January the tourist flow gradually decreases.

In January and February, the Summer Concerts take place in the Kirstenbosch Gardens. A highlight in Cape Town.

Best Travel Time for the Garden Route

The Garden Route can be traveled year-round. Thanks to its location by the Indian Ocean, the weather is quite mild. Even in winter (July - August), temperatures rarely fall below 65°F. From November to April, there is hardly any rain, and temperatures (68°F - 86°F) are the most consistent.

The best travel time for the Garden Route and Cape Town is from November to the end of March. The temperatures are invitingly warm, although it can get very hot during the summer months of December to February. In the winter months from June to August, it can be cool and rainy, and even snow can occur.

In the South African summer from December to February, it's peak season. This means that many tourists are out and about. You need to book accommodations early. Nevertheless, these are my favorite months.

Generally, the months from September to May are considered the best months for the Garden Route. It is still too cool for me from September to the end of October.

After the peak season eases off from mid-January to about mid-March, it is warm, and rain showers are rare. This time is particularly nice for visiting South Africa's south.

Since December is summer vacation in South Africa, especially around Christmas and New Year, coastal towns are very crowded. Prices increase significantly. As previously mentioned, we had a real problem finding a place for dinner in a restaurant in Hermanus because locals had made reservations in advance. The peak season for the Garden Route is from mid-December to mid-January.

The rainiest months are June - August.

-> My tips for the Garden Route

Climate and Weather on the Garden Route

The Garden Route offers a maritime climate with warm summer months and a mild winter. Unlike the climate in the Cape region around Cape Town, the winds are usually moderate. Storms like those you experience in Cape Town in summer are rarely felt along the Garden Route; I personally have never experienced them and have been here six times.

Nevertheless, the Garden Route is one of the rainiest regions in South Africa. Therefore, you must expect rainfall throughout the year.

The humid sea winds from the Indian Ocean rain down on the hilly slopes of the Garden Route. In winter, it rains the most.

The further you drive towards Port Elizabeth and east, the warmer it becomes in winter. Rainfall also decreases. In this region, you will experience more rainfall in summer.

Along the Garden Route, the thermometer can also reach 86°F - 95°F in summer. The hottest area is in Oudtshoorn towards the interior. Sea temperatures are ideal around 66°F - 70°F.

Swimming and Beach

For a beach vacation and cooling off in the ocean, I recommend the South African summer months. My tip: The further east you go, the warmer the Indian Ocean becomes.

Hiking

For hiking, you should choose the not-so-hot months between April and November. In summer, it can be very hot; however, the weather is more stable. And honestly, what speaks against a hike to the sunrise on Table Mountain, Lion's Head, or early in the morning in Robberg Nature Reserve?

I've also hiked in the hot months. In Tsitsikamma, thanks to the coast, there is always wind, making it not quite so hot.

Whale Watching

The best time for whale watching in and around Hermanus is from June to November when the Southern Right Whales migrate to the area. The peak season is from September to the end of October when whales come closer to shore to mate, calve, and nurse their young. Then, you can see the whales from land.

During this time, you will also witness impressive breaches, tail slaps, and the "waving" with their flukes as the whales frolic in the waters near Hermanus.

At the end of September, the Whale Festival takes place in Hermanus (Link to the website). However, there are usually a few 'resident whales' that you can see year-round on tours in Walker Bay, even from Cape Town.

When planning your trip, keep in mind that the whale watching season can vary slightly from year to year. It's always good to check with local tour providers or your booked accommodation about the best times for whale watching in Hermanus.

Kite Surfing and Wind Surfing

The best wind in South Africa blows in summer from November to February. The coastline in and around Cape Town hosts many beaches that not only offer fantastic conditions for kite surfing but also showcase stunning natural beauty.

The wind is indeed strong here, which is why the King of the Air Contest takes place here in Cape Town at Bloubergstrand from the end of October to the beginning of November. There are many great spots in the area where you will find the entire elite around this time, in Cape Town and along the Garden Route.

For beginners, Hermanus and Witsand at the De Hoop Nature Reserve are ideal.

Wine Tour

The best time for wineries is from October to the end of April. Then, it is more stable and mostly dry. Most wine regions are located in the Western Cape province, with a moderate maritime climate. I believe the best time for wine tours is between February and April when the grape harvest begins and wine festivals take place. My tips for the wine region in and around Stellenbosch.

There are also wineries along the Garden Route:

However, we only tested the wineries in the Winelands and in the north.

  • Theescombe Estate Wine in Port Elizabeth
  • Plettenvale Estate in Plettenberg Bay
  • Packwood Wine Estate in Knysna
  • Herold Wine Estate in George
  • ReedValley in Mossel Bay
