Costs to Consider for a Vacation in the Faroe Islands

What does a vacation in the Faroe Islands cost? In this article, you will learn everything about the prices and expenses you can expect. From arrival by plane or ferry to accommodation, meals, and transportation. We will show you what we spent and how you can plan your budget. This way, you will know what expenses to anticipate.

Depending on the time of year, you should budget around $2,000 per person for a one-week vacation in the Faroe Islands. On average, we spent about $260 per day. This includes flight, rental car, and vacation apartments. Additionally, meals in restaurants, fees for hikes, and fuel expenses should be included. We never cooked for ourselves, so we needed a slightly larger budget.

You can save money by booking the ferry early, traveling with your car or RV (as I did on my second trip to Iceland), and staying in budget accommodations or campgrounds. You can also save on car rental. We did not choose the smallest vehicle as we were traveling with five people on our first trip. Alternatively, you could forgo a rental car and travel by bus. We wanted to be independent.

Key Takeaways

  • The Faroe Islands are an expensive travel destination, especially concerning travel, accommodation, and food costs. However, the unique landscape makes every expense worthwhile.
  • There are no direct flights from the United States. Currently, flights via Paris are the cheapest option. We flew via Denmark and made a 3-day stop in Copenhagen. Traveling with the Norröna ferry is a more cost-effective, although time-consuming alternative, especially if you want to bring your vehicle.
  • You can save money by booking early, cooking for yourself, and thus reducing the total costs of a trip to the Faroe Islands.

Sample Calculation: Overview of Expenses

How Much Money Did We Need for 1 Week in the Faroe Islands?

Since I keep receiving questions regarding the costs and prices for the Faroe Islands, I created a table here. Below is a detailed breakdown by type of expense, so you can get an idea of how much money you will need for your trip to the Faroe Islands.

To give you a concrete idea of the costs for one week in the Faroe Islands, we have compiled a sample budget. The total costs for one week are approximately $2,000 per person. For two people, the estimated total costs are around $4,000.

Travel costs make a significant portion of the budget. Fortunately, Atlantic Airways now also flies to Paris. This has reduced travel costs by half, as flights through Copenhagen are very expensive.

The remaining costs break down as follows:

  • Accommodation
  • Food (supermarket, dining out, fuel)
  • Transportation (ferry, underwater tunnel)
  • Additional expenses such as fees for hiking, guided tours

The choice of accommodation and meals significantly impacts the budget. Hotels are more expensive than vacation apartments.

This sample budget is designed to help you better estimate your own expenses and shows that careful planning is essential to keep costs in check.

Type of Expense | Total $ | Cost per Person $ Flight via Paris (currently cheaper than through Copenhagen) | $760 | $380 Vacation apartments | $1,629 | $814.50 Rental car | $658 | $329 Groceries | $250 | $125 Dining out | $352 | $176 Fuel | $120 | $60 Hiking fees | $50 | $12.50 Guided tours | $700 | $350 Tunnels and ferries | $167.62 | $83.81 Souvenirs (postcards) | $5 | $2.50 Total Expenses | $3,817.60 | $1,824

For a one-week Faroe Islands road trip, plan a budget of $1,800 to $2,000 per person. We were there at the end of July, almost entering the off-season. Since there were no puffins on the islands anymore, prices were lower. You can save more by cooking for yourself and doing tours without a guide.

On the second visit, we left the ferry for 4 nights while returning from Iceland with my RV. In total, we had 3 full days, as we arrived in the middle of the night. We saved on the expensive campground and spent the night in a supermarket parking lot (the recommended free parking was full and too steep).

Type of Expense | Total $ | Cost per Person $ Ferry for RV (under 6m, + 2.50m height) | $1,192 | $596 Campgrounds | 800 DKK ($91.01) | $45.55 Groceries (we still had a lot from Iceland) | $30 | $15 Dining out | $120 | $60 Fuel | $126.15 | $63.07 Hiking fees | $53.87 | $26.93 Tunnel | 200 DKK ($26.80) | $13.40 Souvenirs (postcards) | $5 | $2.50 Total Expenses | $1,644.84 | $822.41

Overall, traveling with your own RV (and continuing to Iceland) saves you a considerable amount of money. While the ferry costs may seem high, paying that price for 3 days is not worth it. We did pay more for the ferry to Iceland, but for 3 days in the Faroe Islands without the ferry, it would have cost $226.41 per person. With $75.50 a day and occasionally dining out, we had a very economical trip.

You can get round-trip tickets for a flight via Paris with Atlantic Airways/Air France from Frankfurt (FRA) via Paris (CDG) to Vágar (FAE) starting at $380 (booked through Kayak). If I were flying from Stuttgart, I would have to pay $130 more. This includes one checked bag and one carry-on.

Atlantic Airways offers the categories Low, Flex, and Flex+, with no business class.

For the same flight dates, a ticket from Frankfurt via Copenhagen to Vágar would cost $576. Almost $200 more. It was once cheaper since we had a 3-day stay in Copenhagen during our first trip.

In addition to Atlantic Airways, Air France, KLM, SAS, and Lufthansa offer flights with a stop in Amsterdam, Paris, or Copenhagen. Check the departure airports, as Frankfurt was consistently the cheapest during our research.
