Travel Reports & Tips for Destinations in Denmark

The country of Denmark, located north of Germany, often ranks at the top of global studies when it comes to quality of life. It's no wonder, as the endless sandy beaches, the vibrant capital city of Copenhagen with its innovative food scene, and nearly 7,300 kilometers of coastline attract more tourists each year to vacation in Denmark. Here, I will share my best tips for Denmark.

Highlights in Denmark

The main attractions in Denmark are its natural sights. Here are our highlights:

  • The Chalk Coast of Denmark: Møns Klint (Chalk Cliffs of Møn) and Stevns Klint (the counterpart to the Chalk Coast of Rügen)
  • The wide sandy beach in Rømø delights everyone
  • Dragon Festival on Fanø in June
  • The Faroe Islands, part of Denmark: A true paradise if you love rugged landscapes
  • Greenland in Winter (Greenland is officially part of Denmark but largely politically autonomous)

Travel Tips for Denmark

Here you will find travel tips for Denmark that will help you plan your trip. Featuring recommendations for highlights and overrated attractions.

Why Choose Denmark as a Destination?

Denmark is an ideal travel destination if you are looking for peace and nature. The country consists of the Jutland peninsula (mainland) as well as the islands of Funen and Zealand (where Copenhagen is located). Almost 500 additional islands belong to Denmark, including popular vacation spots like Rømø, Fanø, Langeland, Bornholm, Funen, and Møn.

Before your trip, you need to decide whether you want to travel to the North Sea or the Baltic Sea. Like us, there are pros and cons. At the North Sea, you are dependent on the ebb and flow of the tides. The sea is often "wilder" and not as shallow as at the Baltic Sea, where the water is always there.

For families, I recommend heading to the Baltic Sea. I personally enjoy both but tend to lean toward the wilder and broader beaches of the North Sea.

How Much Time Should You Plan for a Round Trip in Denmark?

Fortunately, Denmark is not as large as its Scandinavian neighbors Sweden and Norway. For a stress-free round trip, I recommend planning at least 2-3 weeks. If you have less time, you should focus on one region (for example, Jutland).

For the capital, Copenhagen, I would plan three days. Here you can find my suggestions on what to do in three days in Copenhagen.

Paying in Denmark: You Can't Do Without a Credit Card

During my trips to Denmark, I have never needed cash. Even the smallest amounts are paid by credit card. EC cards are a typically German thing. So, my tip is: Get yourself a good travel credit card before your trip to Denmark.

The Danish currency is called the Danish Krone (abbreviated: DKK). I always roughly convert: For 1 Euro, you get about 7.4 DKK. If you want to calculate accurately, you should download the apps Currency (Apple) or Easy Currency (Google) on your smartphone.

Best Time to Travel to Denmark

The best time to travel to Denmark is during the summer. From mid- June, the days are very long and dry. However, you should always be prepared for rain. They say if you want summer, you should fly to Mallorca. I also enjoy the fall, but during that time, you have to expect the first storms and a lot of rain. Any time.

I also think it's fantastic to take a little break by the sea in a house on the long sandy beach during New Year's. A friend of mine does this regularly with his family, and he assures me it's highly recommended.

Due to the proximity, most Germans travel by car. There are ferries from Fehmarn, Rostock, and Sassnitz (Rügen). However, especially Copenhagen can be ideally reached by train.

Travel Guides for Denmark

For my travels, I purchased the MARCO POLO Denmark Travel Guide. It is small and compact. For the Danish North Sea coastline, I recommend the Dumont Travel Pocketbook for the Danish North Sea Coast. The guide contains many tips from the author and, of course, useful information for sights and routes.
