Cape Town, My Favorite City! Soon to Be Yours?

Here you will find all the tips and travel reports for your trip to Cape Town. I have been to my favorite city and the region more than 8 times, and I have gathered all the travel tips for you here. The metropolis of Cape Town - also known as the "Mother City" - is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It has its rough edges, beautiful and less beautiful places (from a tourist perspective), but I appreciate all aspects. The best part: In Cape Town, you can experience so much. Culinary, cultural, historical, and active!

Here are my tips and travel reports with all my experiences for your trip to Cape Town. Enjoy!

Best Time to Travel to Cape Town

The beautiful thing is that you can visit Cape Town all year round. During the European summer months (winter), it's pleasantly warm during the day with temperatures between 14 - 22 degrees Celsius. When the sun is out, it feels much warmer. Once the sun goes down, it gets cool. Also, it can rain heavily during these months (I've experienced it).

The best months for me are from mid-December to the end of March. Fall (April - June) and spring (September to mid-December) are ideal for cheaper prices and fewer tourists.

How Much Time to Plan?

The question 'How much time should I plan for Cape Town during our South Africa trip?' is often asked. If you're visiting Cape Town for the first time, I recommend spending 3-5 days in Cape Town with the Cape Peninsula.

We like to stay for a week or longer and repeatedly visit the Winelands (Stellenbosch), the Cape of Good Hope, and Table Mountain.

Hotel Recommendations

I have personally tested all these accommodations (Airbnb and hotels) because I love coming here:

  • Bayview Boutique Hotel, Tamboerskloof. Stunning views of Table Mountain, Swiss owner (very nice)
  • Camps Bay Village, Camps Bay. Close to the beach
  • Airbnb, Green Point. Perfect location - Airbnb Plus, a special accommodation
  • Premier Hotel Cape Town, Sea Point
  • DoubleTree by Hilton Cape Town Upper Eastside (Woodstock)

Great Restaurants & Cafés

In Cape Town, you can find a great café or restaurant at every corner, especially in the city center. Sometimes we feel like we are just eating our way through the city all day long.

If you follow our tips for great food in Cape Town, nothing can really go wrong. Use the YELP or TripAdvisor app to search for places in the area.

Our 5 favorite cafés & restaurants:

  • The Pot Luck Club (Woodstock, reserve 3 months in advance)
  • Truth Coffee
  • Pizza Bocca
  • Gold Restaurant (a culinary journey through the African continent)
  • Charly's Bakery

The currently best travel guide is the Dumont Direct Cape Town. Every single tip I can share with you and emphasize. A more detailed version is the Pocket Guide for Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula (but you don't need it if you read all my tips here and in the other articles).

Travel Costs

The South African currency keeps losing value against the Euro. Therefore, traveling to South Africa is quite inexpensive for us. Cape Town is one of the more expensive places in South Africa. However, you can enjoy a star menu (Pot Luck Club) for 50 Euros per person.

This is what a trip to South Africa costs (listing of hotel, flight, rental car, activities, ...)

Currently, the best free travel credit cards are the DKB Bank Debit Card, GenialCard (Hanseatic Bank), and the Mastercard Gold by TF Bank. With a setup of at least 2 of these cards, you can almost always withdraw money for free at ATMs abroad and pay on-site without foreign transaction fees for foreign currencies! -> Here you can find all tips and my experience for the best travel credit cards in comparison.

Rain in Cape Town

It rains far too rarely in South Africa. Especially during the German summer (July and August), torrential rainfalls can occur. We have experienced it ourselves.

If it does rain, you must definitely check out the Zeiss MOCAA Museum and the District Six Museum. Otherwise, there are few alternatives in Cape Town. The Mojo Market takes place indoors. At the V & A Waterfront, you can go to the Watershed or the Time Out Market at the Waterfront to indulge and shop.

The aquarium is a very popular attraction in Cape Town. I have and will never visit it, so I can't give any judgment on it except that animals belong in the sea.

Conclusion about Cape Town

Cape Town is and remains one of the most beautiful metropolises in the world for me. And South Africa's most beautiful city. Here you will find truly everything: Great accommodations, good food, and you can experience a lot.

Whether it's a hike to Lion's Head, a climb to the Table Mountain, or down via abseiling. Somewhere, a market is always taking place where you can taste food from all over the world. Plus, a glass of wine from the surrounding Winelands near Stellenbosch. Perfect.

Above all, we appreciate the positive development in many townships. Often neglected by the government, people are taking their fate into their own hands. Start-ups with creative ideas are emerging. We think that's great!

Life here as a tourist is easy. I can't express it any differently.

We can't get enough of it. That's why we keep coming back to discover more of Cape Town.

Why I Love Cape Town?

Cape Town has everything I need: Sea, stunning nature with Table Mountain, Twelve Apostles, Signal Hill, and Lion's Head. A rugged coast with beautiful beaches, great markets, nice cafés, and excellent restaurants. All at a price that is affordable for us. Because the South African Rand has been stable for years.

The people are always friendly and helpful. No matter which neighborhood. Don't be afraid. I will show you which places you can move around safely. I personally find most areas of Cape Town not dangerous. However, there are places you should avoid, especially after dark.

Note: Are you wondering why the penguins at Boulder's Beach, the Cape of Good Hope, or Chapman's Peak Drive are not mentioned? I've decided to write a separate article for the highlights on the Cape Peninsula with the Cape of Good Hope.
