Travel Trends 2025: Our Top 15 Most Beautiful Destinations

Sofronio Cobos

Updated: 26 May 2026 ·

Year after year, the travel guide 'Lonely Planet' announces the travel trends for the upcoming year with its 'Best of Travel 2025'. I like to take a look at the trends and selected destinations, even if I'm not quite sure if everything is going according to plan (or money).

Since I've never followed a trend and just look at the top travel destinations out of curiosity for the coming year, here's my own list of destinations for travel around the globe. I hope to inspire you and excite you about my recommendations. Where will your next trip be? Germany, Europe, or somewhere far away?

Allgäu (Bavaria, Germany)

The Allgäu impresses with its beautiful nature, outdoor activities, and of course the Bavarian castles. Leading the way is Neuschwanstein Castle, the favorite castle of King Ludwig. The Allgäu is especially worth a visit with children. You will find easier hikes in and around Füssen, Balderschwang, and Bolsterlang, as well as the summer toboggan run in Füssen or the Tegelberg and many swimming lakes.

Co-author Isa found her choice of residence here and has written down her best tips for Füssen with children.

Let's be honest, do you have India on your travel destination list? I certainly didn't. Now that I've been there, I am endlessly fascinated. Yes, it's loud, chaotic, and dirty. Regardless, I love it! The people are incredibly friendly, the nature is truly remarkable, and the cities provide a unique experience on their own. My highlight: encounters with people and experiencing tigers in the wild for the first time. Wow! Oh, and you should not miss seeing the Taj Mahal as one of the Wonders of the World. If you're looking for relaxation afterward, Goa is just the place for you.

Europe's Capital of Culture for 2025 admittedly doesn't have the best reputation. However, travel is meant to break down prejudices. When would be a better time than now? Discover Chemnitz and its cultural highlights.

You can ideally combine your visit with a longer weekend in the Erzgebirge, the Saxon Switzerland, or the nearby larger cities of Leipzig and Dresden.

Here are our tips for Chemnitz.

Are you in the mood for an extraordinary adventure in the far north? How about Lapland in Finland? The land of 1,000 lakes is also a truly attractive travel destination in winter. For adventurers and winter enthusiasts, with 200 days of snow guarantee a year, it is a real winter wonderland.

In addition to the snow guarantee, the far north has another plus: The Northern Lights dance more beautifully and intensely in the sky north of the Arctic Circle than anywhere else. I recommend a husky sledding safari, where you can become a team with your sled dogs and control the sled yourself. This is my secret tip in nature.

If you don't want to commit to a multi-day sledding safari in Lapland, you can also travel to Finland for skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or polar light photography. It is definitely worth it. I undertook both activities and, of course, wrote about it:

A week of sledding on a Husky safari above the Arctic Circle. I took the trip with Diamir. Here you can book the trip with Diamir 1:1.

Here you can learn more about my other trip to Lapland with many outdoor activities.

Armenia

Armenia is a real hidden gem, nestled next to neighboring Georgia, which is booming as a travel destination. The Armenian alphabet (alongside the Georgian & Korean) is among the three most advanced in the world, with the script being one of the most beautiful.

The highlights are numerous: From Garni and the Geghard Monastery to the capital Yerevan, with a fantastic food scene, and the 'Switzerland of Armenia', Dilijan National Park, there are more places you shouldn't miss.

Here you can find my collected travel reports with tips for Armenia.

Aladağlar National Park (Turkey)

If you love being outdoors as much as I do, you will love Aladağlar National Park! Rugged cliffs, deeply carved gorges, and turquoise shimmering lakes await you here. Whether hiking or climbing - the spectacular natural backdrop immediately captivated me.

Here you will find all my tips and experiences about hiking in Aladağlar National Park.

Bologna (Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy)

The ultimate foodie secret in Italy. I love Bologna and strolling through the streets, tasting Parmigiano Reggiano, Mortadella, Prosciutto di Parma, Aceto Balsamico, Ragù Bolognese, Tortellini, and much more, or seeing the most famous sights in Bologna: the two towers (Due Torri), the city's landmark.

Great Barrier Reef in Queensland (Australia)

Scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays - unbelievably beautiful! photo by viel-unterwegs.de

2025 is a very special year for the Great Barrier Reef: For the first time in history, a natural wonder has been nominated for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This nomination honors the reef as a living, worthy icon of our Earth - and sets a strong signal for global conservation.

I recommend visiting the reef right now and experiencing the magic of this unique ecosystem for yourself. Thanks to intensive conservation measures, the Great Barrier Reef displays impressive colors. Snorkeling or diving trips to the more remote reefs offer unforgettable insights into the fascinating underwater world with colorful corals, turtles, and tropical fish.

My tip: Support local providers who actively work to preserve the reef and educate yourself about sustainable travel options in advance.

Here you can find my guide for visiting the Great Barrier Reef.

Nepal: Always with a view of the Himalayan Mountains

19 days through the Annapurna and Himalayan mountains of Nepal and Bhutan sound exciting? They truly are. Chris was hiking in Nepal for a week with DIAMIR Erlebnisreisen and later explored the highlights of the enchanted kingdom of Bhutan.

First, he trekked through the impressive Annapurna range of Nepal. The accommodations were in cozy inns, always with a view of the massive Himalayan mountain range with its peaks rising over 7,000 and 8,000 meters. From coniferous to rhododendron forests, steppes, icy cold, and lush jungle-green, it has everything. You should visit the cities of Kathmandu and Pokhara as a cultural-religious contrast to the tranquility of nature.

In Bhutan, you cannot visit individually; only with a local guide. The country opened to tourism only in 1974 and occupies a unique position regarding culture, religion, architecture, and nature that is hard to put into words.

The beautiful flower island of Portugal has captured my heart. Do you enjoy hiking and want to escape to the sun in the dreary November? Then this is the perfect time to travel to Madeira. For flower enthusiasts, March and April are peak season. But be careful: Flights and accommodation prices are high during this time, and it is crowded with tourists.

Check out our many tips for Madeira here.

Malta

2025 is the perfect opportunity to discover Malta: This small island paradise in the Mediterranean surprises with an exciting mix of culture, nature, and Mediterranean lifestyle. Particularly worth visiting are the historic cities of Valletta and Mdina, as well as the impressive coastal landscapes around Gozo and Comino.

I recently traveled to Malta, did a lot of hiking, and gathered many tips for Malta on my blog - from the most beautiful sights to my personal favorite spots. Feel free to check out my posts and get inspired for your trip: My Malta tips on Viel unterwegs.

Oman is my recent discovery and a real gem on the Arabian Peninsula. Very varied in terms of landscape, rich in cultural sights, and with incredibly hospitable and helpful people. To be honest, I completely underestimated how diverse and beautiful this country is.

My hidden gem for this year is Uzbekistan. The country, the landscape, and especially the extraordinary hospitality of the locals captivated me. Ideal from April to June or in autumn, you can travel from Chiwa to Bukhara and Samarkand to the Fergana Valley along the ancient Silk Road. Either by train or bus.

A little-known destination that is not yet overcrowded.

I booked my trip to Uzbekistan with Diamir (here you can see the itinerary).
