Best Time to Visit the Netherlands
Planning a trip to our neighboring country of Holland or the Netherlands? Here you will find all the information about weather and climate for your vacation in the Netherlands. The best time to visit for city trips to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague.
So, when is the best time to visit Holland?
If you don't feel like reading the whole article, here's a quick summary:
When is the Best Time to Visit the Netherlands?
The best time for a beach vacation is from June to August. April, May, September, and October are also ideal months. However, a swim in the North Sea might be quite chilly. The best time for a city trip is from May to September. For the tulip bloom (Keukenhof), April and May are the best months. I highly recommend Eindhoven and Amsterdam in September!
My tip: Travel outside the peak season. A city trip to Amsterdam can also be beautiful in April or October. There are fewer tourists in the city, and you can avoid a heatwave. I visited Amsterdam in June. During a heatwave with temperatures over 32 degrees, it was really hot, and every step was exhausting since the air was practically stagnant between the buildings and the canals.
Geographical Location of the Netherlands
The Netherlands is located in Western Europe and shares borders with Germany and Belgium. It also faces the North Sea to the west. The country is known for being extremely flat; the highest mountain is only 322.5 m tall, located at Vaalserberg in the southern part of the country.
Since there is always some confusion about whether to say Netherlands or Holland, let me clarify: the Netherlands refers to the entire country, while Holland actually represents the northwestern regions. In everyday language, we usually refer to the country as Holland. However, this implies the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
By the way, the ABC Caribbean Islands Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao, as well as Sint Maarten, are included. It's nice that residents can visit these islands without a passport or visa, right?
General Climate Overview
The Netherlands has a maritime temperate climate year-round. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the weather is the most consistent. The warmest month is August with an average of 22° C, while January is the coldest month with an average of 5° C.
You can generally rely on our German climate. However, due to the proximity to the North Sea, the climate is not as changeable and is milder than ours. The humidity is, however, at 80%, significantly higher than ours.
Winters are mild, and summers are pleasantly warm, almost never hot.
Best Time for Tulip Bloom
Spring is a beautiful time of year, and there is no better place than the Netherlands to enjoy it. This country is home to some of the most stunning tulip fields in the world. The best time to visit is usually from mid-April to early May when the tulips are in full bloom. During this time, the fields are a sea of colors, and the scent of the flowers is simply intoxicating. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the infamous "Tulip Mania" - when tulip prices skyrocketed absurdly in the 17th century. Whether you're interested in history or just want to enjoy breathtaking scenery, a trip to the Netherlands will surely delight you.
The temperatures in the Netherlands in April average between 6° C and 14° C, making it rather cool. However, you may also experience days in April with temperatures reaching 20° C. Be sure to pack a warm jacket for April!
Generally, it rains on 15 to 22 days in April. Nonetheless, April is the best month for the tulip bloom. Especially at Keukenhof, you should not miss the blooming tulip fields. Here are my tips for visiting Keukenhof.
January: Peace and Winter Festivals
The perfect time for a visit if you are looking for a quiet and relaxing vacation.
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, January is the perfect time to visit the Netherlands. With its charming landscapes, dozens of quiet and idyllic towns, and numerous winter festivals, this beautiful country is a hidden gem often overlooked by tourists.
One of the highlights in January in the Netherlands is New Year's Day, marking the start of a new year. During this time, large celebrations with concerts, fireworks, and traditional Dutch foods like Oliebollen take place in cities like Amsterdam.
In addition to these events, many smaller towns host their own unique festivals in January, celebrating everything from Christmas to Saint Nicholas. So why not consider going in January? You won't regret it!
February
A great time to visit if you want to experience Dutch culture at its most festive.
If you're looking for a truly unique vacation experience, a trip to the Netherlands in February is unbeatable. During this time, the country comes alive with vibrant and festive traditions, from lively parades and outdoor markets to exquisite culinary festivals. Whether you're interested in art, music, history, or just want some fun and games, there's definitely something for you when visiting the Netherlands in February. And if you want to immerse yourself in Dutch culture and savor every delicious moment of your vacation, this is truly the perfect time to travel! Just be sure to pack rain and windproof clothing.
April - The Best Month to See the Country in All Its Splendor
April is the perfect time for a visit to the Netherlands, as the country really starts to come alive. With long days and warm sunshine, the tulips bloom in full glory, filling the air with vibrant colors and sweet scents.
On the canals in cities like Amsterdam, there's busy boat traffic from locals and tourists, creating a lively atmosphere and plenty of photo opportunities. If you want to explore the countryside outside the cities, April is also one of the best times to hike in one of the many picturesque national parks or cycle through the green hills.
If you want to experience all the beauty (mainly the tulip bloom) that makes this country so special firsthand, be sure to mark April on your calendar!
However, you should be aware of one thing: The weather and climate can be very changeable in April. You might be lucky with temperatures around 20° C or, as we also experience, unlucky with storms and temperatures around 8° C, accompanied by intermittent rainfall. If you prefer more sun during your vacation, you should plan to visit in May during the tulip bloom.
Check here for everything about the visit to Keukenhof and the tulip bloom in April. Here you can read about my experiences in The Hague and Scheveningen (also visited in April).
May
In May, you can expect plenty of sunshine, but also a lot of rain. During my road trip through North Brabant, finishing with some relaxation at the beach in Zeeland, we initially enjoyed 25°C and pure sunshine. However, we unfortunately had storms and unfortunate cold temperatures around 11° C at the sea.
Here you can see the most beautiful sights in North Brabant.
June
June is one of the best times to visit the Netherlands, as many festivals and events take place during this month that allow you to experience Dutch culture. Amsterdam is a great city to explore during this time, and the beaches are also worth a visit. You can ideally combine The Hague and the suburb of Scheveningen by the sea.
August
August is the best time for a beach vacation. This month is also suitable for city trips, as many Dutch people spend their vacations by the sea, making the cities often pleasant to explore.
July
July is one of the busiest months in the Netherlands as it is prime vacation time and summer holidays. However, it is also one of the best times to visit the country, as many events and activities take place in July. If you want a relaxing beach vacation, August might be a better month to travel. From mid-August, schools start again in northern Germany and the Netherlands. The beaches become a bit emptier.
September
In September, I visited Holland for a city trip to Eindhoven. The weather was ideal: around 20° C during the day, but it got quite chilly as soon as the sun went down. A jacket is essential. I enjoy the cooler months for city trips, so visiting Maastricht, The Hague, or Amsterdam in this month is also perfect.
October
October is said not to be the best month to travel to the neighboring country of the Netherlands. However, the weather is perfect for a city trip to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Maastricht, or Eindhoven.
At the beach, you should definitely pack a down jacket and a hat. It could be stormy.
Visiting the Netherlands in November?
November is, in my opinion, not the best time to travel to our neighboring country. The weather is generally not ideal and is rather cloudy than sunny and beautiful.
Best Time to Visit Aruba and Curaçao
In Aruba and Curaçao, a mild tropical climate prevails all year round. It is always warm or even hot! The hurricane season is from July to October, but it only affects Aruba and Curaçao to the extent that it gets extremely hot, as the hurricanes further up in the Caribbean carry all the wind with them. It is unusually calm and even unbearable for locals (mainly in August and September).
The sea temperature is at least 25° Celsius throughout the year. It never gets colder. Daily temperatures average between 28° - 33° Celsius year-round. Rarely does the thermometer drop below 26° C. I love hot temperatures, but despite the wind, it was unbearably hot on some days even for me.
Activities should be planned early in the morning or late in the afternoon (for example, mountain biking) or moved to the sea (SUP, kite surfing, snorkeling, or diving).
In winter, it occasionally rains. Especially in February, locals say it used to rain a little bit every day (very little by our standards). Thanks to climate change, this has largely subsided.
Conclusion on the Best Time to Visit
The Netherlands is a great destination year-round, but the best time to visit really depends on what you want to do. If you want to see the tulip bloom, April and May are the best months. However, if you want to visit the Christmas markets, December is a better option.
No matter when you visit the Netherlands, make sure to pack for the weather - and enjoy your trip!
