Best Time to Visit Canada
The best time to visit Canada depends on which region you want to explore. Canada is the second largest country in the world. Therefore, you need to look closely to determine the ideal travel time for your trip. Several climate zones in the country prompt me to inspect more closely.
But when is the best time to visit Canada? If you don't want to read the entire article, here's a brief overview:
When is the best time to visit Canada?
The summer months from June to September - October are considered the best time to visit Canada.
For Northern Canada, the optimal time to visit is during the summer months of July and August. Summer is very short.
For skiing, you can find ideal conditions from November to March, and in some areas of the Rocky Mountains even until May ("Spring Ski").
In Churchill (Manitoba), the season for polar bears starts at the end of October. You can see the Northern Lights here all year round. However, the best months are from September to March when it gets dark quite early.
Note: In summer, popular locations in British Columbia and Alberta are completely overcrowded. Not only locals but also Americans, Germans, and other tourists flock to the Icefields Parkway and the routes to Vancouver.
So my tip: Avoid the peak travel season in July and August and travel to Canada in April or May. If you enjoy skiing, you can even ski in the Rockies until May. Perfect for a road trip, right?
I was even in Canada in March and took a winter road trip from Calgary through Banff, along the Icefields Parkway to Jasper and then to Edmonton. In Calgary, it was mild enough that locals were walking around in shorts at temperatures of 13 degrees!

Weather by Seasons in Canada
Spring
Spring is ideal for nature lovers who enjoy wildlife watching. You might even see a Grizzly bear waking from hibernation.
The days are long, but unfortunately quite humid. It rains often.
Summer
The most popular months for Canada are during the summer. Especially in July and August, the Canadian Rocky Mountains become an ideal destination for hiking, mountain biking, and spending time in nature. Thus, this region is not only popular among locals but also among tourists from around the world.
Prices are significantly increased, and the attractions and hotspots are completely overcrowded (Peyto Lake, national parks in Banff and Jasper, Icefield Parkway).
The Canadian summer lasts from June to October. The temperatures are pleasant, and the days are relatively dry. The optimal time for a summer road trip is in July and August. Only then are there many tourists, and you must book rental cars and accommodations or RVs early. The prices for all of this, including flights, are also higher then.
On the Icefields Parkway, it seems that this area is very crowded even until September and October.
- The months of May and June are ideal for spotting black bears and grizzly bears as everything blooms and the bears wake from hibernation.
- From June to September is the best time to see numerous white beluga whales in Churchill (Hudson Bay). You may also encounter the odd polar bear relaxing in the flower meadows. You are sure to meet a grizzly bear or two here as well.
Fall
Who doesn't dream of experiencing the Indian Summer at least once in their life with the vibrant colors of leaves changing on the trees? I enjoy traveling to Canada in the fall. In September and October, the days in the Canadian capital Ottawa are still quite pleasant.
Additionally, you can embark on wonderful hikes on the Great Trail, which runs across Canada. I was in the southern Canadian Rocky Mountains to hike sections of it or ride my mountain bike on it.
Read my report here: Great Trail in British Columbia and Ottawa
In the north, it's already cold now. The first snow falls, and polar bears gather on the coast in Churchill, waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze.
- The peak season for polar bears lasts about a month. From mid-October to mid-November, most polar bears gather along Hudson Bay. The ideal location for this is Churchill in Manitoba. I was here in October. Every night, we could marvel at the Northern Lights. A special place and an unforgettable trip.
Winter
The winter months in Canada are quite cold and dry. The thermometer often drops to -30° C in British Columbia and Alberta, where the Rocky Mountains are located. However, I must say that it is a dry cold. It doesn't feel as cold as it sounds, but rather much more pleasant and 'warmer.' Only when the wind picks up, does the wind chill (perceived cold) really reach -30° C (or even lower).
Winter in Canada is a dream for all skiers. The Champagne Powder is fantastic. This fluffy snow is a true delight. I have been to the Rockies twice and have experienced this feeling under my board (in my case a snowboard).
Additionally, winter is ideal for dog sledding, trying your hand at ice climbing, or going on snowshoe hikes. In March, the clocks have already been set to daylight saving time, and it doesn't get dark until after 8 p.m. Thus, the days are already quite long to experience a lot. I love winters in Canada.
- The ideal months are February and March if you want to experience the Champagne Powder. You can start from Calgary or Edmonton (there are direct flights from Amsterdam to Edmonton).
- Generally, the season runs from November to May. The months of January and December are freezing cold (too cold for me) for skiing.

Climate by Regions
Western Canada
In the western part of Canada, temperatures in July and August range from 15 to 22 degrees. Ideal for some hiking.
The best months are before or after the peak tourist season in May, June, September, and October. Unfortunately, it can also be very rainy from September onward. So pack clothing for all eventualities.
Vancouver
Vancouver is located in British Columbia, on the west coast of Canada. Due to its location by the Pacific Ocean, pleasant temperatures around 22 degrees prevail in summer. Even in winter, it stays relatively mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below zero.
Eastern Canada
The eastern part is warmer than the west coast. The thermometer can also exceed the 30-degree mark.
Toronto, Montreal and Quebec
The summers in the major cities on the east coast are pleasantly warm. With temperatures around 20 - 30 degrees, the months of July and August are very popular with tourists. It can even happen that a heatwave brings temperatures up to 35 degrees. I was in these cities during such a heatwave.
Since Montreal has an underground network of shopping malls due to its cold winters, you can also escape to the underground during the hot summer.
In spring and fall, it tends to be damp. It often rains and temperatures are milder and generally cooler.
damp-warm with temperatures between 20 and 29 °C. There could also be heat phases with up to 35 °C. You might have to deal with rain all year round, although summer showers often come with heavy and brief storms.
Center of Canada: Manitoba
The heart of Canada beats in the center in Manitoba. Along the Trans Canada Highway about 30 km east of Winnipeg lies the "Centre of Canada".
The province is divided into two sections: The Northern section, which belongs to the subarctic climate zone with permafrost, and Southern Manitoba, with a humid continental climate zone.
If you want to spend summer in Churchill and Winnipeg, experiencing nature and seeing beluga whales, the months of June to September are ideal. The highest average temperatures in July are 26 °C, and the coldest in January are -11 °C.
However, it is often stormy in fall and winter (I speak from experience). Once the wind picks up, the perceived cold drops far below zero.
- Northern Manitoba: Long and extreme winters. Short and warm summers with little precipitation. On winter nights, temperatures can drop to -40°C.
- Southern Manitoba:
Note: According to Environment Canada, Manitoba has the clearest sky throughout the year. In summer, Manitoba ranks second. In spring and winter, Manitoba is the sunniest province. Would you have thought that?
Alaska and Yukon
Summer days are long. It gets dark very late, and you can enjoy the day longer in daylight with activities - if you wish. The peak season here is also in July and August. Many people are on the move, and accommodations are often full. Timely booking is necessary.
