Australia is an incredible country with countless breathtaking natural wonders. In this article, we present our top 10 must-see attractions in Australia for nature lovers and road trip enthusiasts.

If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure, then you should take a closer look at Australia. The land of kangaroos and koalas is known for its stunning nature and endless road trip possibilities.

In this blog post, I will introduce the best sights in Australia for nature lovers. Whether you're planning a road trip through the Outback or want to explore the best beaches in Australia - here are our highlights (featuring the top attractions and our personal favorite spots).

After my 3-month journey through Australia (Western Australia, South Australia, and Northern Territory, including the Outback), I became completely enthralled by the red continent. Before, I thought: "Oh, it's just beautiful beaches and turquoise water, plus koalas and kangaroos" - while I didn't entirely disregard the wildlife here. After receiving a photo book about Australia, my opinion changed drastically. I had to go there. Co-author Isa also took a professional break to explore the East Coast of Australia.

Since then, I've been a huge fan of one of the most diverse countries in the world. That's why I've compiled a list of the most beautiful places with insider tips that not everyone knows.

Australia offers something for everyone:

Deciding on the top attractions in Australia is difficult. The highlights, experiences, and especially the encounters are just too diverse. Of course, there are also downsides, such as extreme poverty and alcohol addiction among many Aboriginal people or the devastating bushfires caused by climate change, leading to significant losses in nature and wildlife.

  • Exciting and diverse landscapes
  • Thriving cities
  • Interesting cultures
  • Fascinating wildlife
  • Varied activities and tours
  • and incredibly friendly people.

List of the Most Famous Attractions in Australia

Of course, everyone wants to visit the top sights in Australia. Among these are the following places and attractions worth seeing at least once in your lifetime.

The 10 Top Attractions in Australia

The most famous sights of a country are always nice and well. I also enjoyed many other places in Down Under. Of course, Uluru is very impressive, especially when you walk around it and can closely observe its surface texture.

I was also very interested in the significance and stories of the Aboriginal Dreamtime. However, take a look at my favorite attractions in Australia and add them to your list if possible.

  • Uluru (formerly Ayers Rock)
  • Great Barrier Reef
  • Kakadu National Park
  • 12 Apostles
  • Ningaloo Reef
  • Kings Canyon
  • Great Ocean Road
  • Wave Rock
  • Outback
  • Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge

Most Famous Attractions & Landmarks

1. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

The Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is one of Australia's main attractions. It is located in the Outback near Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory desert. The park includes Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) as well as the nearby rock formation Kata Tjuta.

The park is home to numerous sacred sites of the Aboriginal people and offers views of scenic landscapes, great hiking trails, and lookout points. Visitors can explore the over 500 million-year-old rocks of Uluru, participate in ranger-led hikes, or take a helicopter flight over the park.

The massive red sandstone rock amidst the desert is sacred to the Aboriginal people and a popular draw for tourists from all over the world. At Uluru, you can enjoy stunning sunsets as well as many hiking and climbing trails for those who wish to explore the rock.

The sunrise, on the other hand, is worth experiencing at the red rock formations of Kata Tjuta.

The nearby Kings Canyon is also worth seeing, which I found just as imposing as Kata Tjuta and Uluru in the middle of nowhere.

Getting there: From Alice Springs (not worth a longer stay), it's a four-hour drive via Stuart Highway to reach Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. One of the highlights at Uluru is to visit the Field of Lights. For me, a must-do activity is to walk all the way around the large red rock. This Australian landmark is a fascinating place. Rightly, the national park with its natural wonders counts among the best attractions in Australia.

My experience with tips for visiting Uluru and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

An absolute highlight was the light installation "Field of Light" that you must see when you are at Uluru. During our visit, winter set in, and it was incredibly cold (sorry for the expression, but it's hard to describe it otherwise). Still beautiful.

You must purchase tickets for this nighttime spectacle in advance on the official website (link)!

2. Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road is a 243-kilometer coastal drive along the southern coast of Australia, known as one of the nation's most scenic routes. The coastal road passes by numerous spectacular viewpoints and beaches, all of which are worth a visit. The Great Ocean Road is particularly popular with road trip fans and offers unforgettable views of the wild Australian coastline.

Along the scenic road, you'll find the famous Twelve Apostles, stunning limestone cliffs, and the popular Great Ocean Walk. Both are natural wonders that you should explore.

3. Great Barrier Reef: The Largest Coral Reef in the World

One of the most impressive natural spectacles on our planet is the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. Thousands of coral islands and reefs, some spanning several kilometers, create a massive ecological paradise, home to countless tropical fish, turtles, rays, and other sea creatures.

Divers and snorkelers can discover a true underwater world here that they won't encounter anywhere else. On land, there is also plenty for nature lovers to discover in Australia.

Unfortunately, this diving paradise is threatened and in decline: Often regarded as one of the seven wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef is battling coral bleaching and a significantly decreasing coral cover. According to scientists, more than half of its coral has already been lost.

Particularly paradisiacal near the coral reef are the Whitsunday Islands. With their snow-white beaches, turquoise waters, and the surrounding coral reefs, they are a popular destination. The group of islands is the dream of every Australian traveler and should be considered in your travel planning if you're exploring the East Coast.

My current alternative: Western Australia's West Coast and the Ningaloo Reef. In recent years, I haven't seen such a intact and colorful reef as here. Especially during whale shark season, a visit and tour to swim and snorkel with these gentle sea giants is worthwhile. Nature reveals itself here in its most beautiful form.

5. Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land in the North

Kakadu National Park is one of the best-known and most visited national parks in Australia. It covers 19,804 square kilometers in the Northern Territory, making it slightly larger than the Netherlands. The park is not only home to many endangered animal and plant species but also offers unique nature, vast savanna landscapes, impressive rock formations, and cascading waterfalls. The best way to explore the park is by vehicle, by boat on the water, and from the air in a helicopter.

No place enchanted me as much as Arnhem Land, the land of the Aborigines, which you can only visit with permits, and the adjacent Kakadu National Park. I could have stayed here much longer than just a week. Culturally, it is one of the most significant attractions in Australia alongside Uluru.

Tips for Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land

6. Blue Mountains National Park

The Blue Mountains National Park spans several thousand square kilometers and offers various experiences for nature lovers. In the Blue Mountains National Park, you can observe a wide variety of animals in their natural habitat, including koalas, kangaroos, and wallabies. Reptiles like snakes and lizards can also be found in the park.

Some of the most popular activities in Blue Mountains National Park include hiking and climbing. There are several designated hiking and climbing routes with varying degrees of difficulty.

7. Ningaloo Reef: Swimming with Whale Sharks

Swimming with whale sharks - a dream come true! photo by viel-unterwegs.de

Staying at Ningaloo Reef was one of the most beautiful places during my 3-month road trip in Australia. Swimming with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef cannot be described and is a special attraction.

I haven't seen such an intact reef in years as here. The corals shine in all colors and are massive! If you don't want to swim with whale sharks, you can paddle around here on a stand-up paddleboard, go kayaking, or snorkel at the reef. My stay at the luxury camp Sal Salis made those five days at the reef even sweeter.

If you travel to Ningaloo Reef outside of whale shark season, you might be able to snorkel with humpback whales. An equally exciting adventure in my opinion.

Check out my detailed report with information and tips on swimming with whale sharks (with a video) here.

8. Kangaroo Island, Endangered Paradise in South Australia

Koala Kangaroo Island
If you know how to find koalas, it's really not hard to spot the cute animals in the eucalyptus trees on Kangaroo Island. photo by viel-unterwegs.de

Kangaroo Island is an island off the southern coast of Australia near Adelaide, known for its impressive landscapes and fantastic wildlife. On the island, koalas, wallabies, kangaroos, and many other animals live in the wild, which you can observe on a safari or a walk through the bush. Kangaroo Island is also famous for its white beaches, picturesque bays, and cliffs, as well as the crystal-clear ocean.

The small kangaroo island in South Australia is an absolute must if you're traveling in and around Adelaide. I spent two days here and was able to experience the entire island with its natural beauty and wildlife diversity. It was beautiful. The dark brown smaller Kangaroo Island kangaroos are numerous and cute, and you can count the koalas hidden in trees. There are really a lot of them! One of the top highlights in Australia that many people overlook.

One of the most beautiful and best national parks in Australia is Flinders Chase National Park with its Remarkable Rocks on Kangaroo Island. Or the sea lions that you can observe here among the rocks and in the water.

I had so much wonderful information to share about Kangaroo Island that I wrote a detailed article about it: Tips for Kangaroo Island in South Australia. The island is an underrated attraction in Australia.

9. Kings Canyon

The canyon is a massive, deep gorge that stretches through the red rocks of Kings Canyon National Park. The landscape is stunning and offers many great viewpoints where you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

There are several hiking trails that lead through the canyon and the surrounding landscape. Kings Canyon is definitely worth a visit! There's also a great campsite for those traveling by camper van through Australia.

I've written all the information and highlights about Kings Canyon here

10. Wave Rock

Wave Rock in Hyden, Western Australia, is a natural monument shaped like a wave. It looks like a wave you can surf on. Very impressive and a relatively unknown attraction in Australia. If you're driving through Western Australia, you shouldn't miss this rock that is 15 meters high and 110 meters long (and get a typical 'surfer photo'). No wonder that many photographers come here.

The wave shape was created over thousands of years under the influence of water and wind. Wave Rock is 15 meters high and 110 meters long.

Tip: Wave Rock is best viewed at sunrise or sunset when the colors of the sky accentuate the reddish hue of the rock.

Highlights on the East Coast

1. Fraser Island

Australia East Coast Fraser Island
Australian attractions: Fraser Island and the largest sand island in the world. Perhaps the most beautiful of all islands in Australia. photo by viel-unterwegs.de

Fraser Island is a huge sand island off the east coast of Australia and, at over 123 kilometers in length, the largest sand island in the world. The island is known for its white sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, turquoise sea, and rainforest-like jungles. There are also numerous lakes on the island, of which Lake McKenzie is probably the most famous. This turquoise lake is protected in a basin of rainforest and is therefore perfect for a refreshing swim. Fraser Island truly invites countless activities - whether it's hiking through the dense rainforest, 4WD drives on the stunning beaches, or boat tours along the coast.

2. Cape Tribulation

In the middle of the rainforest of Australia lies the small town of Cape Tribulation. The name is programmatic, as two UNESCO World Heritage sites meet here: the continent's coast and the Great Barrier Reef with the Daintree Rainforest - one of the oldest rainforests in the world.

The name "Cape Tribulation" may sound like an idyllic spot to relax, but the area can absolutely live up to its name 'Cape of Tribulation' when it rains heavily (rainforest indeed).

James Cook ran aground with his ship and had to take a month-long break to repair it before he could continue his journey. The island's name is derived from this incident.

Popular activities among visitors include guided tours and scenic flights over the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.

Attractions in Western Australia

1. François Peron National Park: Colorful Highlight in Western Australia

Overall, Western Australia was incredibly beautiful and diverse. One place that blew me away was definitely François Peron National Park. Why?

First of all, you can only enter here with a 4WD vehicle. Right at the entrance, it's time to deflate the tires and hit the somewhat sandy tracks. I love it! Then these colors: The track shines deep red, the green of the landscape, and the vibrant blue of the sky are outstanding. Then the sea: Crystal clear and azure in the sunlight. From the cliffs, we see turtles and manta rays gliding by.

Attraction of the day: Cape Peron, where everything can be captured in one picture. Incredible!

2. Perth: Cozy Big City on the West Coast

I found Perth surprisingly beautiful. I spent over a week here to relax after the first four weeks of road tripping. Here you can explore fantastic street art, go out to eat well after the long drive through Nullarbor, because the restaurants and cafes are plentiful.

You can also take a day trip to Fremantle and Rottnest Island or simply enjoy a beach day. I really liked Perth, and thus it ranks among my top attractions for cities in Australia. Underrated and worth seeing!

3. Kalgoorlie and the Super Pit

Did you know that one of the largest gold mines in the world is located in Western Australia? No? I didn't before my trip either. This town is totally crazy and reminded us of an old Western town. We wouldn't have been surprised if a sheriff had suddenly ridden around the corner on his horse.

A visit to the Super Pit is totally interesting; the gigantic vehicles in the open mine are worth seeing, and you feel like you've been shrunk. We also took a scenic flight to appreciate the scale from above.

4. Rottnest Island

Katrin Quokka Rottnest Island
Quokkas are the attraction on Rottnest Island. Visitors love a day trip to the island to see the animals. Must do: Bike riding. photo by viel-unterwegs.de

Rottnest Island is just a short ferry ride from the city of Perth and offers nearly untouched white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and diverse wildlife. The island is especially known for its large populations of quokkas, a species of wallaby that is famous worldwide.

Australians love vacationing here, and activities like swimming, diving, snorkeling, biking, and hiking are quite popular. You can rent bikes on the island and ride across it.

Note: Quokkas are one of the attractions in Australia because the animals (which actually look like large rats) always seem to smile in photos. But they almost only pose because they are fed by tourists. Travel further around the island to find quokkas that are still 'natural' and curious, and then you will get your quokka selfie.

5. Esperance

Esperance Eleven Mile Beach Right Side
Australian attractions: Esperance and Lucky Bay with the beautiful beaches are really amazing. photo by viel-unterwegs.de

Esperance is surrounded by small islands and a picturesque landscape in Western Australia. The white powdery beaches and the clear, turquoise sea make Esperance and the surrounding area an absolute dream destination.

Esperance is far from a major city. Nevertheless, the coastal section in southern Western Australia is among the most beautiful there is. The fine sandy beaches around Esperance and Lucky Bay, where you regularly meet kangaroos on the beach, and the calm sea make it hard to say goodbye at some point. Lucky Bay has been voted Australia's best beach multiple times.

You can also take dolphin and whale tours here. I loved it, although we only saw dolphins and sea lions.

Highlights in the Northern Territory

1. Bitter Springs - Northern Territory

A great place for crystal-clear water and tropical springs with palm trees in the middle of the Outback are Bitter Springs. It's worth stopping along the way through the Outback to take a dip in the springs. This continent surprises me more and more the longer the journey lasts.

2. Crazy Roadhouses in the Outback

Yes, you read that right. The roadhouses (which would be rest stops for us) are all special. They make an effort to keep drivers entertained on the long stretches ahead. Especially between Darwin and Adelaide, there are many roadhouses where we just had to stop. On the way to Alice Springs, there are numerous that you should check out.

For example:

  • Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta - gas station, shop, and bar in one. Everything is naturally in the Pink Panther style in pink.
  • Wycliffe Well UFO Capital - must-see.

3. Litchfield National Park

If you're looking for a national park filled with breathtaking waterfalls, natural pools, great hiking trails, and stunning nature, then Litchfield National Park in Australia is perfect for you!

I visited here even twice because I liked it so much. This beautiful park is located in the Northern Territory and is easily accessible from both Darwin and the Kakadu National Park. In Litchfield National Park, you can enjoy great waterfalls, such as Florence Falls or Wangi Falls. You can even swim in them if there aren't any crocodiles (there are signs up when that's the case). The Tolmer Falls are also worth a visit.

But you can not only admire the waterfalls but also stroll along the beautiful hiking trails and enjoy the impressive scenery of the park.

Check out my detailed article on the attractions and tips for Litchfield National Park.

4. Katherine Gorge

Katherine Gorge is one of the most beautiful gorges in Australia and a true paradise for canoeists to explore the beauty of the park on water. You can also hike, take a helicopter flight over the gorge, or simply enjoy the view. Katherine Gorge also provides some of the best photo opportunities in Australia (at sunrise and sunset), ensuring that you end your holiday with unforgettable memories of this beautiful country.

My Conclusion on Australia

Australia is a country full of contrasts. The attractions in Australia are spread out over a vast area. There are so many that at least five of these dream islands and landscapes or one of those cities can be visited on a vacation. The list of must-dos for me hasn't gotten shorter, rather longer. But that's okay because I thoroughly enjoy being a visitor in this amazing part of the earth, and there are countless reasons to return.

These sights and cities I want to visit on my next trip to Australia:

Have you ever been to Australia? What do you think are the most beautiful attractions in Australia?
